Whalen Signs New Contract With Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (February 19, 2008) - The Connecticut Sun announced today it has signed veteran guard Lindsay Whalen to a three-year contract. The Sun also signed point guard Jamie Carey to a training camp contract Tuesday.

Per team policy, no terms were released.

"As a Restricted Free Agent we knew Lindsay would get offers from other teams," said Sun general manager Chris Sienko. "While we would have the right to match any offer from other teams, we made an offer that enabled us to wrap up Lindsay without any back-and-forth. Lindsay is too valuable an asset to our team, and we made an offer accordingly."

"It's exciting to know that Lindsay is going to be a huge part of our future," Sun head coach Mike Thibault said. "This team is going to be built around her and Asjha's leadership, and I think fans will be able to see Lindsay's ability in that area become more noticeable this coming season."

Whalen enjoyed her most complete season as a professional in 2007, averaging a career-best 13.4 points per game while leading the league in total assists with 169. She also finished tied for the league lead in assist average with 5.0 per game. Whalen set new single-season highs in steals (73), rebounds (162), defensive rebounds (129), offensive rebounds (33) and made field goals (156). She also set a franchise record with 13 made field goals en route to a career-best 33 points against Detroit on June 24th.

A 25-year-old Minnesota native, Whalen was selected by the Sun in the first round, 4th overall, of the 2004 WNBA Draft.

A 5-foot-6 point guard from the University of Texas, Carey will return for her fourth season in Connecticut in 2008. Carey finished the 2007 season ranked No. 1 in 3-point field goal percentage in the WNBA (.451) and established career-highs in virtually every statistical category. The guard played in a career-best 33 games for the Sun and matched her career-high with 13 points at Chicago on Aug. 11th. She also dished out a career-high five assists at Chicago on May 31st.
