Detroit Shock News Release
Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has acquired the fourth overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft in exchange for six-year veteran forward Swin Cash. Detroit now owns the fourth, eleventh and eighteenth selections in the draft.
"Having the fourth pick in the draft allows us to add a talented young player to our roster who will be able to learn from our championship veterans," said Laimbeer. "And adding an influx of great young players over time is what successful organizations must to do to remain successful."
Detroit originally selected Cash with the second overall pick in the 2002 WNBA Draft. She finished third in rookie of the year balloting in 2002, and in 2003 she helped lead the Shock to its first WNBA Championship while earning her first All-Star nod and a place on the All-WNBA Second Team. Cash injured her knee late in the 2004 campaign, but bounced back from the injury to pick up her second All-Star berth in 2005, and help the Shock to its second title in 2006.
"Swin has done great things for our franchise, helping us win two championships, and has also done great things in the community. We're very appreciative of her time here, and we wish her the greatest success in her new start."
Cash leaves Detroit with career averages of 12.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists. She ranks second in Detroit's career scoring (2,369), rebounding (1,068) and assist (568) lists.
