Connecticut Whale News Release
The Whale kicked off their new 2012-13 season with a pair of close home losses this past weekend. A crowd of 8,148 was on hand for the season opener at the XL Center on Friday night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, and saw the Whale jump out to a 2-0 lead. The Sound Tigers went on to score the next six goals of the game, though, and handed the Whale a 6-4 defeat. Then on Sunday vs. the St. John's IceCaps, Connecticut led for much of the game, but St. John's scored a last-second power-play goal in the second period and another man-advantage goal in the third, to emerge with a 3-2 win. The Whale power play went 5/13 in the two games, and Kris Newbury scored three of the goals, while rookie Kyle Jean bagged a shorthanded penalty shot goal, and an assist, in his first pro game Friday and lit the lamp again on Sunday.

This week:
The Whale hit the road for the first time on the year, and get their longest bus trip out of the way, with a two-game excursion to Norfolk, VA. The Whale and the defending Calder Cup-champion Admirals will face off at 7:30 at Scope Arena on Friday and then again at 7:15 on Saturday.
Friday, October 19 at Norfolk Admirals (Scope Arena), 7:30 p.m.
- The Admirals won the first Calder Cup in team history last season, sweeping the Toronto Marlies in four games in the Finals, but underwent an affiliation change shortly after the victory. Norfolk's new affiliate is the Anaheim Ducks, after the Tampa Bay Lightning left for Syracuse following five years of partnership with the Admirals.
- The Admirals ended the Whale's season last year in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, ousting Connecticut in a hard-fought six-game series.
- Norfolk also won the AHL regular-season championship in 2011-12, with a 55-18-1-2 record for 113 points and an AHL-record 28-game winning streak to finish the season.
- The Admirals are off to a 2-0-0 to the new season under the guidance of new head coach Trent Yawney.
- Patrick Maroon and John Mitchell both had two goals through the first two games for Norfolk.
- Radio - live with Bob Crawford on "Beethoven Radio" AM 1290, and on-line at www.ctwhale.com.
Saturday, October 20 at Norfolk Admirals (Scope Arena), 7:15 p.m.
- The Whale were 0-3-0-1 in four regular-season games vs. the Admirals last year. That included 3-1 and 4-2 losses in Connecticut's two visits to Norfolk.
- Radio - this will be the Whale's first broadcast of the season on "The Rock" 106.9 WCCC-FM, live with Bob Crawford. All Whale Saturday night games this year will be beamed on The Rock 106.9 WCCC's 50,000 watts of power.
"Whale TV":
- This Thursday, October 18 will mark the debut of "CT Whale Insider", a weekly on-line show that will provide viewers with behind-the-scenes features and exclusive content never before available to Hartford hockey fans. Hosted by the voice of the Whale, Bob Crawford, CT Whale Insider will include segments such as "Whale Week in Review", "One on One with Bob Crawford", "Around the AHL", "On the Road with the Whale", "It all Starts Here" and more, and will be available exclusively at the Whale's official website, www.ctwhale.com.
