Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD - Sanford (7-6) hit the Danbury Westerners (7-7) early and often Friday evening, pounding the visitors for seven runs on just seven base hits.
The Mainers struck early in the game, as Sanford picked up two runs in the top of the first. C.J. Krowiak (Binghamton) reached base to lead off the contest on an error, and Zach Jancarski (Maryland) followed him with a double to put two men in scoring positon. The Mainers would score both on a pair of ground ball outs to take the early 2-0 lead.
Despite a rough start to the game, Westerners starter Keelan Smithers (Long Island) settled down to go five innings, allowing just four hits, two runs, one earned alongside two walks and five strikeouts.
Sanford received a dominating start from Dan Wilson (North Carolina Asheville), who went five-and-two thirds and allowed just two hits and no walks, including five strikeouts. Wilson started the game by retiring the first eight men he faced.
Two more runs would cross in the 7th inning for Sanford. Jancarski led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole second base, his fourth steal in as many attempts. Shaine Hughes (Monmouth) reached immediately after on an error, and stole second base to put both men in scoring position. Nelson Mompierre (Miami Dade) immediately singled to drive home both runs, doubling the lead to 4-0.
The Mainers promptly added more insurance in the 8th, pounding out another three runs to put the game out of reach. Ako Thomas (Michigan) walked to open the frame, with a Krowiak single and a Jancarski hit-by-pitch to follow. With the bases loaded, Hughes slapped a ball into right field, good enough to score two runs. By the time Danbury got the ball into the infield, Jancarski came down the baseline and sidestepped Danbury catcher Jason Agresti (Binghamton) with the ball in his mitt to score.
The Mainers return to action June 25 when they travel to North Adams, Massachusetts to face the North Adams SteepleCats. Pregame coverage begins at 6:15 PM on the NECBL Broadcast Network and the Legends in Sanford 1220 AM and 102.3 FM, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM.
