NORTH ADAMS, Mass.- A three-run eighth inning sealed the deal for the North Adams Steeple Cats on Friday night, as they topped the Vermont Mountaineers 7-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.

The Mountaineers got two innings out of starter T.J. Santiago (Linden, N.J./Adelphi), who allowed three earned runs on six hits. Santiago struck out one and walked nobody.

Robby Buffis (Lanesboro, Mass./Ithaca) started for North Adams, and went five innings allowing no earned runs on five hits. The righty also walked nobody and struck out one batter.

Vermont scored a run in the first inning, but the lead was wiped away quickly by the Steeple Cats, as they scored one of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Nick Riotto (Washington, Penn./Penn State) singled and scored on a groundout by first baseman Keaton Wright (Troy, Ill./So. Il. Edwardsville).

North Adams added on two more runs in the bottom of the second when C.J. Price (Naples, Fla./Cornell) drove in John Mazza (Lexington, Mass./Northeastern) on an RBI single. Easton Johnson (Austin, Texas/Texas Arlington) later drove in Price with a single to make it a 3-1 Steeple Cats lead.

That score stayed in tact until the fifth inning, when Keaton Wright knocked an RBI single, driving in Daniel Holst (Durango, Colo./SE Missouri St).

North Adams broke the game open in the eighth, when they scored three runs on three hits. Nick Riotto got them going by ripping an RBI triple that scored two runs. Dustin Shirley (Los Angeles, Calif./Dartmouth) then capped the Cats' day offensively with a RBI single that drove in Riotto.

Vermont's Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) scored one of their two runs on the day in the first inning after he reached on an error, and was driven in by Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood).

The Mountaineers added one more in the eighth when Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana) drove in Osinski with an RBI groundout.

Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) also had a good day at the plate for Vermont, as he reached base four including with a single in the second and a double in the ninth.

The Mountaineers fall to 2-11. They will be in action again on Saturday night when they'll welcome in the Danbury Westerners. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI and online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
