Westchester Knicks News Release
PORTLAND - The Westchester Knicks (18-13), the official NBA Development League affiliate of the New York Knickerbockers, fell on the road 119-105 against the Maine Red Claws (16-13) tonight in a game that saw 18 lead changes. With the win, Maine cut Westchester's lead in the Atlantic Division to just half a game.
Shooting 67 percent as a team in the first quarter, the Knicks racked up 36 points for an early lead. Maine's saving grace came in the form of threes as the Red Claws took 16 shots behind the arc, hitting seven of them to keep Westchester's lead to eight after the first 12 minutes.
Maine went on a 12-4 run in the second to take their first lead of the game, but Westchester battled back and the teams went back-and-forth, trading eight leads in the quarter. Points from the perimeter continued to be the Red Claws' working tactic while the Knicks kept things in the paint with 42 of Westchester's 61 first half points.
The teams continued their very different styles of play into the third, though the matchup remained even with neither team taking more than a two-possession lead. The Red Claws took 11 three-attempts to the Knick's one, Westchester keeping the overall shooting advantage with 58 percent to Maine's 47 percent.
It would all come down to the final quarter as the Red Claws outpaced the Knicks 30-16. Maine's bench combined for 19 points as their shooting finally hit the fifty percent mark. Westchester couldn't keep up, as the Atlantic Division leaders fell 119-105.
Six Knicks found double digits on the night, led off the bench by Gani Lawal Jr. who finished just short of a double-double with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Jimmer Fredette had 18 points in the loss, with seven assists and five rebounds. Jordan Bachynski supplied 16 points, six rebounds, and swatted away with five blocks.
An impressive eight Red Claws had double digits, led by Levi Randolph off the bench with 19 points and six rebounds, going a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Coty Clark just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Omari Johnson and Andre Stringer finished with 15 points apiece.
The Westchester Knicks travel to Des Moines next for a morning matchup against the Iowa Energy on Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 11:30 a.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on MSG Network and on the NBA Development League's YouTube channel.
