Wenatchee's Big First Too Much for Sweets to Overcome
August 5, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Wenatchee, Wa- Sometimes in baseball, a team can play eight and a half good innings and lose. That was the case of Tuesday night in Wenatchee as the Sweets fell to the Applesox 8-5. The Applesox (22-27) now move out of last place in the East and the Sweets (21-28) fall into that spot.
The game was a battle from the first pitch to the last as the Applesox broke out for five in the first inning. In a game with no playoff implications, some might think that the Sweets would have rolled over and called it a game, but they fought back.
Walla Walla got a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Dyllin Mucha and a run in the third when Alex McKenna scored on a wild-pitch that made it 5-2.
The Applesox would tack on another run in the third to make it 6-2, but the Sweets would fight back again. They added a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Nick Halamandaris and then plated another in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kyle Nixon to make it 6-4.
The Sweets looked to diminish the two-run deficit in the top of the seventh inning when they had runners on first and second with two outs and Halamandaris up at the plate. He was 3-3 coming into the situation with a double, a home run and a single. He took Wenatchee's All-Star pitcher Hunter Wells to a 10th pitch of the at-bat and lined a one-hopper to the hole on the right side.
In a split-second, what seemed to an RBI single was taken away by a miraculous diving stop at first and the out was completed when Hunter covered.
The Sweets then tried a comeback again in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second with one out, Alex McKenna lined an RBI double into right-center field to make it a 6-5 game. That put runners on second and third with one out, but the side was retired with back-to-back strikeouts.
The Applesox added two in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run and that would end the night for the Sweets' comeback hopes.
The two teams will match-up again tomorrow at 7:05pm. The Sweets will try to snap their six game losing streak and the game can be heard on ESPN Walla Walla.
