Tampa Tarpons News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The dog days of summer were in full swing Tuesday night as the Tampa Tarpons (12-13) dropped the opening game of a six-game set against the Dunedin Blue Jays (10-15). Despite picking up nine hits, the Tarpons were only able to scrape across one run on a solo home run from C Omar Martinez.
RHP Sean Hermann (4.1IP, 5H, 3R, BB, 4K, 2HR) was not able to replicate the masterful outing he had against Dunedin back on July 7th. During this go-around against the Blue Jays, Hermann kept Tampa within striking distance, only allowing three runs; however, the Tarpons' offense was not able to pick him up. Hermann's cutter stood out tonight, as he used it 23% of the time and generated a whiff rate of 45% with the pitch.
Jeffrey Wehler put Dunedin on the board first in the second inning, launching his third home run of the season.
Fast forward to the fourth inning, where Peyton Williams singled past a diving 1B Ronny Rojas. Wehler stepped up to the plate again and smacked his second long ball of the game over the wall in right field to give Dunedin a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
Double digits for C Omar Martinez! Martinez's tenth home run of the season was a blast to right field. The solo shot pulled Tampa within two in the home half of the fourth.
Dunedin tacked on two more runs after loading the bases in the sixth. Williams walked, Roque Salinas singled, and Jaden Rudd got plunked. Rikelbin De Castro provided the blow, lining a 96.8 MPH single to left field, which brought in two runs and grew the Blue Jays' lead to four.
In the eighth, 2B Jared Serna grounded a base hit up the middle to open the frame. He advanced to second when 3B Jesus Rodriguez flew out to the wall in center and Martinez drew a free pass. Another walk to SS Brenny Escanio loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate with two chances to get back in the game. Back-to-back strikeouts ended the rally.
The Tarpons will look to bounce back tomorrow night against the Blue Jays. RHP Justin Lange will make the start, with the first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. at GMS Field.
