
Threshers Break Tie Twice, Drop Opener Against Jupiter

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Despite a career day from Cade Fergus, the Clearwater Threshers (61-29, 17-8) allowed seven runs in the last three innings in an 8-5 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads (48-43, 13-12) on Tuesday night at the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. The Threshers and Hammerheads continue their series with a Wednesday night doubleheader.
Emaarion Boyd punched a single up the middle off Hammerheads starter Jose Salvador to lead off the ballgame. He stole second base and advanced to third on a groundout before Felix Reyes drove him in with a sacrifice fly to give the Threshers an early lead. Jupiter tied the game with a double in the home half of the first to even the score at one apiece.
Fergus hit a double down the left field line with one out in the third inning and scored on a double by Justin Crawford that gave the Threshers the lead back at 2-1. Fergus added another run in the fifth, launching a solo home run to double the Threshers lead to 3-1.
Harrison Spohn tied the game at three with a two-run double in the sixth. Chad Castillo drew a walk on Hammerheads reliever Yeremin Lara with one out in the seventh and moved to third on a double by Fergus. Boyd singled up the middle to drive in both runners and give the Threshers the lead at 5-3.
The Hammerheads came back with four runs in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game at 7-5. They added an insurance run on a single in the eighth to extend their advantage to 8-5. The Threshers were retired in order in the ninth to finish off an 8-5 loss.
Giussepe Velásquez allowed one run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings in a no-decision. Nathan Karaffa walked two and struck out one in 1.2 frames, with two runs allowed on two hits. Daniel Harper (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Seth Nightingale allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts in 1.0 inning.
Fergus tied his career-high with three hits for the third time this year...He tied the Threshers mark for most runs scored in a game with three...Rincon recorded his tenth multi-hit game of the season...Boyd has five hits and six RBIs over his last two games...Velásquez struck out four and left with the lead in his Single-A debut...Reyes' sacrifice fly moved him into a tie for fifth in the league with his 45th RBI...The Threshers continue their six-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads (Single-A, Marlins) with a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 26...
