Weekly Weather Report: Weekly News and Notes of the Stockton

December 2, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Stockton Thunder News Release

Fresh off of three straight wins over the Bakersfield Condors, the Thunder kicked off the week with game three of their current seven-game homestand, once again, taking on the Condors. Similar to the previous game, the goalies kept the teams scoreless after the first 20 minutes were over, but in the first minute Tyler Maxwell scored his team leading seventh goal of the season when he put back a Peter Sivak rebound behind Condors goalie Frans Tuohimaa. However Bakersfield would tie the game up and then take the lead off of two-straight power-play goals in the second period.

Bakersfield added to their lead in the third before Roberts Lipsbergs scored his first pro goal when he got on the end of a Adam Phillips rebound and put it past the goalie. Jonathan Lessard added an empty netter for Bako, snapping the Thunder's three-game winning streak and halting a streak of five win in-a-row by the Thunder over their rival.

The Thunder would have to get back on their horses just two days later when the Utah Grizzlies came to town. With a late first period penalty to Utah, the Thunder had the chance to strike early, however time was winding down quickly on both the power play opportunity, and the period. After being acquired in an NHL trade earlier last week and being reassigned to the Thunder, Alex Mallet carried the puck in the zone and dropped a past to his new centerman Jack MacLellan, who then fired a wrist shot near side on Joe Howe to put the Thunder on top and with just two ticks left in the Utah penalty.

On the ensuing faceoff Adam Phillips would be charged with tripping and the time carried over to the second period where the fresh ice helped Vinny Scarcella zip one by Philippe Trudeau making his first appearance since November 14. It'd be the only one he'd allow though as the Thunder offense came to life while the defense and Trudeau closed the door the rest of the way.

The Thunder received second period goals from Keith Seabrook who went upstairs on Howe during a two-on-one. MacLellan got his second of the night once again from Mallet and then James Henry knocked in his fourth of the season on another two-on-one when he put the puck in the back door off a pass from Tyler Shattock.

Shattock scored his own goal on yet another odd-man rush and seconds later Mallet scored his first goal in a Thunder uniform as the Thunder took down the Grizzlies 6-1. Mallet had three points in his debut and he was joined by MacLellan and Henry who each had three. Trudeau stopped 35 of 36 in his second ever pro win.

What a Debut!

He began last week as a member of the organization that drafted him but ended the week as a member of the New York Islanders organization.

Alexandre Mallet was traded along with a third round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to the Islanders in exchange for former Thunder defenseman and third rounder Andrey Pedan.

Pedan played 42 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and 7 games with the Thunder (added 2 games in the 2014 Kelly Cup Playoffs).

Mallet was immediately reassigned to the Thunder and made an instant impact on a line with Jack MacLellan and J.T. Barnett. He had the primary assists on both of MacLellan's goals against Utah and also scored one of his own, the fifth of his season, and first as a member of the Thunder.

10 Years of FANtastic Fun

Ten years ago in the month of December the Stockton Thunder played their first home game at Stockton Arena. The team returned from a lengthy road trip to start their first ever season to a packed house of 10,117 rabid fans to cheer the Thunder on against the Phoenix Roadrunners.

The night was December 10, 2005 and it started with a Mike Lalonde power-play goal with assists coming from Maris Ziedins and Geno Parrish just 7:51 into the first period.

Steve Slonina added two goals, including a third-period breakaway goal as the Thunder took down the Roadrunners 4-0. It was a 22-save shutout win for the Thunder's first ever player, Jake Moreland and the win happened to be the first shutout in Thunder history!

We will celebrate the 10th season in the Central Valley on December 5th. This special accomplishment should make Michael Reinsdorf, Brad Rowbotham, Dan Chapman, Brian Sandy, Dave Piecuch, Bill Davidson, Coach Cichocki, Coach Thomas, Coach Kromm, the players, the staff, the Arena, and most importantly you fans feel proud of. Thank you to everyone for making the Thunder a staple of Stockton and the Central Valley.

All-Time Watch

We're monitoring the situation between Garet Hunt, Ryan Constant and Mike Lalonde as Lalonde's all-time lead in points could be in danger of falling to one of the Thunder's star players this season.

Lalonde's 156 career points is in jeopardy as Constant pulled ahead with 144 points with the Thunder while Hunt is right behind them both with 141.

That means Constant is just 12 points back of tying the record while Hunt is 15 points back of tying the record.

Hunt is the only one close to Lalonde's all-time record of 72 goals with his 51 markers, putting the Thunder captain 21 shy of tying the record.
