Stockton Heat News Release

News and Notes

Stockton is 15-3-1-0 at home since January 2

The Heat have outscored teams 96-73 at home during that stretch (23 goal diff.)

Stockton continues to lead the league in average shots for per game with 34.31

The Heat have now won 10 road games on the year, having won two-straight road games, one in Ontario and one in San Diego

The two-game win streak on the road matches the longest for the season with a chance to extend it on April 12 at Bakersfield

Stockton has the following matchup's remaining this season

Two against San Diego (at Stockton Arena)

Two against San Jose (one at Stockton Arena and one on the road)

One against Ontario (at Stockton Arena)

One against Bakersfield (on the road)

TOTALS: 6 games remaining (four at Stockton Arena, two on the road)

Stockton has gone 0 for 27 on the power play dating back to March 19 at Bakersfield

Stockton has gone perfect on the penalty kill in just 4 of their last 15 games dating back to the beginning of March

The Heat outshoot opponents by 53 shots in the first, 27 shots in the second and 103 shots in the third

The Heat outscore opponents by 13 in the third period but are outscored by 3 in the first and by 32 in the second

Stockton's win on Sunday in San Diego was the 14th overtime game the Heat have played this year. The Heat have won 10 of those games, six in overtime and four in the shootout to give them a .714 winning-percentage in overtime

Amazingly, the Heat have six different goal scorers in OT as Aaron Johnson, Derek Grant, Mason Raymond, Emile Poirier, Hunter Shinkaruk and now Kenny Agostino have won games for the Heat in the extra five minutes

If you count shootout winners Kenny Agostino and Derek Grant would have the most game winners after the game goes past 60-minutes with two. Freddie Hamilton and Turner Elson were the other two players who've won games in the shootout for the Heat

Turner Elson scored his third shorthanded goal of the season, which leads the team and sees him tied for the fourth most shorthanded markers in the AHL

Tyler Wotherspoon scored his first goal for the Heat on Friday, which happened to be the game winner

It was his first game winning goal since October 25, 2014 @ Rochester

He scored on Sunday too, marking the first time the defender had points in back to back efforts

Kenny Agostino already surpassed his previous high accomplished last season in goals and points but he also surpassed his career high in assists with his 29th assist last week, one better than his previous high

Stockton has used the second most goaltenders in the league (7) behind only Toronto (8)

Jon Gillies, Karri Ramo, Kent Simpson, Eric Hartzell, Kevin Poulin, Joni Ortio and Nick Schneider have all appeared in a game for Stockton

Every team in the Pacific except for the Ontario Reign have used four or more goaltenders this season

Bakersfield - 6

San Diego - 6

San Antonio - 4

San Jose - 4

Texas - 4

Ontario - 3

Impressive Teen Between the Pipes

After his Medicine Hat Tigers were knocked out in a "win to get in" game in a one-game playoff, Nick Schneider joined the Stockton Heat and saw the bench in his first game, however he didn't expect that goalie Kevin Poulin would be hurt in a road game in Ontario.

Since then it's been the Nick Schneider show for the Stockton Heat, as the club is riding the excitement and youth of their teenage goaltender, who went 2-1 in his first three games, posted a 2.02 goals-against-average and a .940 save-percentage.

To contrast, Jon Gillies, who's widely considered one of the top prospects the Calgary Flames have, also went 2-1 in his first three games, but Gillies posted a 1.34 goals-against-average and a .950 save-percentage along with two shutouts.

That being said, pretty impressive from undrafted Nick Schneider, who's trying to show how his game can translate to the pros. So far Schneider has allowed 6 goals in his first 100 shots against and has kept Stockton afloat in the hunt for the final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.

Speaking of the Playoffs

The Heat are in a battle for their playoff lives right now, needing to continue to win and hope to get a little help along the way.

While Stockton has pulled within a virtual tie of the Bakersfield Condors, the Heat still remain in the sixth placed spot in the Pacific with a .516 points-percentage. The teams to keep an eye on are the Charlotte Checkers, who occupy the fifth spot in the Central which could crossover and compete in the Pacific Division playoffs (Central has one more team than the Pacific) are at a .557 points-percentage with six games remaining.

Right behind them are the San Jose Barracuda with a .540 points-percentage and five games remaining, sitting in fourth in the Pacific followed by the Condors and Heat at .516 with six games remaining.

If the Heat win every game left on the schedule, the team can get as high as .559 points-percentage, which could get them in, however the other teams listed above need to do a bit of losing. Charlotte's magic number is 10 points, which goes down every time they win and teams chasing them lose.

Stockton's magic number is 17, with 12 points up for grabs, however the games against San Jose could prove to be the biggest ones for Stockton if the Checkers stumble down the stretch.

Charlotte plays two games against Rockford and two against Milwaukee this week while San Jose plays one in San Antonio and a pair in Texas. Bakersfield plays in San Diego and then a pair of games against Ontario.

Friar Turns Pro

The much anticipated 2012 first round draft pick of the Calgary Flames, Mark Jankowski, joined the Heat after signing an entry level deal with the Flames and signing an Amateur Tryout on March 30 with the Heat through the remainder of this season.

Jankowski, 21, was selected 21st overall in 2012 out of a prep school in Canada before committing to play with Providence College in September 2012. Four years later, the forward improved every year, leading his team in points with 40 in 38 games played and sharing the team lead in goals with 15.

The St. Catharines, Ontario native joined the Heat after Providence was knocked out of the NCAA tournament and made his pro debut on Friday, April 1 against the Ontario Reign. He looked good standing between Turner Elson and Drew Shore and started the play that eventually would stand as the game winning goal from Tyler Wotherspoon in the third period.

That came after nearly setting up two other tally's for the Stockton Heat except for a goal that was waved off after review and a terrific save by Peter Budaj, but Jankowski could have easily tacked on a few more points in his first game.
