Weeg, Ayers Lead Sweets to Game One Win vs Cowlitz

Walla Walla, WASH- The Walla Walla Sweets (4-3) took the first game of the road trip 5-3 against the Cowlitz Black Bears (4-3).

The Black Bears got off to a quick start with two runs in the third inning. The Sweets then came back with a run in the fourth on a double play with the bases loaded that brought home Chris McCready (San Diego).

Down 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, Clayten Ayers (Georgia College and State) delivered with runners on the corners. He launched a three-run home run out to left field to give the Sweets the 4-2 lead.

Walla Walla tacked on with an RBI single by Ryan Johnston (UC Irvine) in his first at-bat as a Sweet.

The Black Bears added a run in the seventh, but the Sweets held on because of AJ Carkner's (Pikeville) to two and a third scoreless innings of relief.

Jackson Weeg (Emory) got the win by throwing six and two thirds innings, only giving up two earned runs and striking out four. The win gave the left-hander a 2-0 record on the season.

Coby Kauhaahaa (Cal State Fullerton) also made his debut for the Sweets in the win and picked up a single in his first at-bat.

The Sweets will send Joe Heineman (Baylor) to the hill tomorrow for a chance at the series win against Cowlitz tomorrow at 5:00 pm.
