Milwaukee Wave News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) Milwaukee Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg had been added to the U.S. National Futsal Team Roster for the upcoming tournament with Canada, Mexico, and Guatemala December 5-7 in Anaheim, CA. Vorberg replaces Brett Phillips (St. Louis Steamers), who had to withdraw from the competition due to injury. The U.S. team goalkeeping staff will now be comprised of Vorberg and Otto Orf (Cleveland Force).

"This is a great opportunity for Nick at this stage of his career," said Wave and U.S. National Futsal Coach Keith Tozer about the 28-year old Vorberg. "I think he'll be a fine addition to this squad and the U.S. National Team Pool."

Vorberg and 10 other current Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) players will comprise the majority of Tozer's squad for the tournament. The U.S. team is slated to play Canada in its opener on December 5 (10:15 PM CST) followed by matches against Guatemala (10:15 PM on December 6) and Mexico (7 PM on December 7). All games will be played at the Anaheim Convention Arena.

The Anaheim tournament should serve as important preparation for the U.S. team ahead of the 2004 CONCACAF Championships to be played next summer in Costa Rica. The top two squads from that tournament will advance to the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will take place in Chinese Taipei in November 2004.

Futsal is a derivative of soccer that is played with five-man teams on an un-walled basketball style court, with a "heavy" (limited-bounce) ball. Under Tozer's leadership, the U.S. team has become one of the CONCACAF region's top squads, finishing first in 1996 and third in 2000.

Both Tozer and Vorberg will be on hand for tonight's game against the St. Louis Steamers (7:05 PM at U.S. Cellular Arena) but will miss the Wave's next game at Baltimore on December 6. Assistant Coach Steve Morris will guide the Milwaukee club in Tozer's absence while Dan Green, another member of the U.S. Futsal Team Pool, is scheduled to take his regular turn in the Wave's goalkeeping rotation against the Blast.
