Wave Washes over Steamers, 7-3

(Milwaukee, WI) The Milwaukee Wave spotted the St. Louis an early 2-0 lead, but regrouped quickly to come back and beat the Steamers 7-3 Friday night (11/28) before 5,509 fans at U.S. Cellular Arena. It was Milwaukee's fourth straight win and improved the Wave's 2003-04 Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) regular season record to a league-best 7-1. St. Louis, which has now lost to the Wave on the front and back ends of a five-game losing streak dropped to 2-6.

Things started well for the Steamers when Steve Butcher converted off a free kick at the top of the penalty area at 2:14 to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead. Craig Scheer followed at 5:21 off a pass from Sipho Sibiya to make it 2-0. Milwaukee began its comeback at 6:54 when Joe Reiniger knocked in an unassisted to goal to make it 2-1. Michael King tallied off a long assist from Greg Howes at 14:31 to even the score at 2-2.

Butcher scored again on a blast from 40 feet out at 5:11 of the second quarter to put the Steamers ahead 3-2. However, the Wave answered with goals from Chris Morman (10:44) and King (12:29) to take a 4-3 lead before halftime.

The Wave continued its run in the third quarter, as Troy Dusosky (3:09) and Morman (3:24) scored on back-to-back restarts to push Milwaukee's advantage to 6-3. Kevin Burk capped off the second half scoring in the fourth quarter as registered an unassisted goal from the top of the penalty area at 7:57. Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg stopped six-of-nine shots faced to raise his record to 5-1, while counterpart Brett Phillips (2-4) saved 10-of-17.

The Wave, which is now 5-0 at U.S. Cellular Arena, begins a four game road swing next Saturday (12/6, 6:35 PM) at Baltimore. Milwaukee's next home game is Wednesday, December 31, 1:05 PM when it hosts the Monterrey Fury.
