Kansas City, MO, November 28, 2003 â The Philadelphia KiXX (7-2) defeated the hosting Kansas City Comets (2-5) tonight, 13-8, in front of 3,865 fans at Kemper Arena. The 13-goal performance marks the best offensive production for Philadelphia this season. Player/coach Don D'Ambra recorded the game-winner at 10:28 of the second quarter, en route to a season-high five-point performance on four goals and one assist. KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas (7-2) earned the victory in net for Philadelphia, turning away a season-high 23 of the 31 shots he faced, while rookie netminder Josh Schrek dropped to 1-1 with the loss for the Comets.
Philadelphia scorched the Comets early, rattling off five unanswered goals, before Kansas City defender Matt Tanzini broke the drought with a strike at 7:33 of the first quarter on a dish from Paul Dolinsky. KiXX player/coach Don D'Ambra struck the board first on a feed from captain Kevin Sloan less than a minute (:47) into the period. Les Lunsford followed suit at 1:45 on an assist from Pappas, while Joel Shanker (2:59), Drew Kopp (3:22) and Goran Vasic (4:12) each tallied unassisted goals. Philadelphia held the 5-1 advantage after one full quarter of action.
Vasic connected on a restart goal at 1:42 of the second to extend the KiXX lead to 6-1. Dino Deleveski and Dolinsky cut into the five-point deficit with consecutive notches at 2:00 and 3:37 of the period. Shanker, Morris and D'Ambra responded with a string of consecutive goals to give the KiXX a 9-3 lead. Shanker recorded his second tally of the night off a dish from Sloan on a power play at 5:24, while Vasic found Morris all alone in front of the net at 8:21 off a restart. D'Ambra concluded the second quarter KiXX scoring spree on a beautiful ball from Mauricio Vincello at 10:28, before Tanzini connected on an unassisted restart goal at 14:51. Defender Tony McPeak added the assist on the first tally, while Kansas City forward Wes Wade made a costly turnover that D'Ambra knocked into the back of the net for his second goal of the quarter.
Vasic struck the board with a restart power-play goal a mere 44 seconds into the fourth. Shanker completed the hat-trick with this third goal of the night at 6:49 on a dish from D'Ambra that gave Philadelphia a 13-4 advantage. Kansas City rattled off four unanswered goals to cut the lead to five, but Philadelphia hung on to earn a 13-8 victory. Newcomer Jamar Beasley started and ended the streak with goals at 8:30 and 12:01 respectively, wrapped around notches from Delevski and Maher.
Notes: Philadelphia connected on both power-play opportunities in the contest, improving to six-for-nine (.667) on the one-man advantages this season. Vincello's second quarter assist to D'Ambra marked his first point scored while donning a KiXX uniform. D'Ambra's five-point performance marks his season-high, while his four goals ties the club's high for most tallies in a single contest this season. The KiXX are now 2-0 in the first game of the back-to-back series this season and enter tomorrow's contest at 0-1 in the latter game of the set.
