Wave Smothers Heat

January 31, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release

Harrisburg, PA - Gino DiFlorio's return to a Harrisburg Heat uniform may have galvanized the crowd at the Farm Show Arena on Friday night, but the Milwaukee Wave displayed little interest in "The G-Man's" homecoming en route to a 15-6 win over the Purple and Black. With the loss, Harrisburg falls to 10-15 on the season; combined with a Baltimore win over Philadelphia, the Heat has fallen into last place in the MISL's Eastern Conference, a half-game behind the Blast. Milwaukee improves to 19-5.

The Wave adhered to its customary formula of suffocating defense and opportunistic offense and took a 5-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 2pg from Marcelo Fontana (1:06) and a 3pg from Matt Schmidt (12:04). Harrisburg found some life in the second, as David Bascome (2:05) and Ze Roberto (10:44) sandwiched doubles around a 2pg from Milwaukee's Greg Howes at 3:48 to make it 7-4, but Milwaukee captured the momentum for good when Fontana, a former Heater, poked home a 2pg with just 27 seconds left in the half to give the Wave a 9-4 at intermission.

Todd Dusosky (12:40) and Brian Loftin (14:31) increased the Milwaukee advantage with third-quarter 2pgs, and the Wave led 13-4 heading into the fourth. Buoyed by the acrobatic and unyielding goalkeeping of Victor Nogueira (22 saves on 25 shots), Milwaukee maintained that edge until Harrisburg's David Barbosa rifled home a 2pg from the right wing at 8:20 to make it 13-6. Milwaukee concluded the 15-6 win with a 2pg from Todd Dusosky at 13:58.

Heat goalkeeper Chris Damico saved 15 of 22 shots in the loss.

NOTES: DiFlorio, assigned mostly to restart and power play duty, recorded no points and no shots in his first game back with the Heat ‚¬Â¦Harrisburg will wrap up its brief three-game homestand tomorrow night as the Philadelphia KiXX come to town. Game time at the Farm Show Arena is 7:35 p.m. Following tomorrow night's game, the Heat will hit the road for six straight February games, not returning home until March 5.
