PL Idaho Falls Chukars

Watts A Pioneer League All-Star

September 7, 2010 - Pioneer League (PL)
Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Pioneer League has named its 2010 All-Star team and Chukars first baseman/designated hitter Murray Watts has been named the designated hitter on the squad. This marks the third straight year the Chukars have had only one player on the 14-player All-Star roster.

The 6-foot-7, 275 pound Murray Watts was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 28th round of the 2010 June Amateur Draft out of Arkansas State University. The lefty hitter has played with the Idaho Falls Chukars throughout the 2010 season.

In 66 games through September 6th, Watts is batting .274 with 25 extra-base hits. Watts is currently in the top three of three Pioneer League categories, as he is second in home runs (14) and walks (41) and third in RBI (54).

Watts had been honored by the Kansas City Royals organization as the Idaho Falls affiliate Player of the Month in June and July before being named the affiliate Player of the Year for 2010 last week.

Watts follows outfielder Hilton Richardson (2009) and pitcher Bryan Casey (2008) as the lone representative for the Chukars on the Pioneer League All-Star team. No other Chukars' player was named an All Star honorable mention this season after the Chukars had at least one such honor in each of the past two years.

The Ogden Raptors and Casper Ghosts both had three players named to the All-Star team to tie for the most players named to the 2010 team. Ogden shortstop Jake Lemmerman was named to the team and was named the Pioneer League Most Valuable Player. Casper pitcher Albert Campos was one of the five pitchers named to the team and was named the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year. A tie in the voting named Helena's Joe Ayrault and Great Falls' Chris Cron co-Managers of the Year.
