Watkins Placed on DL, Gil Transferred to Charleston

CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees announced Saturday that Charleston RiverDogs right-handed pitcher Ben Watkins has been placed on the 7-day DL, retroactive to June 3, and right-handed pitcher Francisco Gil has been transferred to the RiverDogs from Extended Spring Training.

Watkins, a Johnstown, Pa. native, was a 40th round selection by the Yankees in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. The former University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown standout has played in 10 games with the RiverDogs thus far this season, giving up 15 hits, six earned-runs and three walks, while striking out six batters and compiling a 0-1 record with a 4.44 ERA in a total of 13.1 innings on the mound.

Gil, a native of Agua Prieta, Mex., was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on Dec. 21, 2005. The 21-year-old right-hander appeared in 14 games, starting eight, with the DSL Yankees 1 and GCL Yankees between 2006 and 2007. In a total of 45.1 innings on the mound, the 6' 3" hurler posted a 3-3 record and 4.17 ERA, giving up 45 hits and 21 earned-runs, with 12 walks and 39 strikeouts. Gil sat out all of 2008 and 2009 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
