Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Greenville, SC - Ten Greenville Drive runs in the seventh and eighth innings turned a tie game into a laugher as the Drive defeated the Augusta GreenJackets 14-4 in the series opener between the two ballclubs at Fluor Field on Saturday night.

Tied at four in the seventh inning, the Drive sent eight men to the plate and got four runs on two walks and three hits, including a two-run double from Vladimir Frias as part of his three-hit, three-RBI night. The eighth was worse for Augusta, as the Drive sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored six more times to take a ten run advantage. Things got so bad for the GreenJackets that a position player - shortstop Juan Martinez - finished on the mound and got the last two outs of the eighth.

Things weren't always bad for Augusta though, as they drew first blood in the second on Chris Dominguez's tenth home run of the year, a solo shot to put the Jackets ahead 1-0. Later in the inning, with Hector Sanchez at second and Martinez at the plate, Martinez hit a fair ball down the third-base line and tried to stretch the hit into a double. Martinez was thrown out at second base and inexplicably, the home plate umpire did not see Sanchez cross the plate prior to the third out so Augusta's lead was just a one-run lead after the top of the second.

Greenville took advantage of two Augusta errors in their half of the second, tying the game on Frias's RBI single and taking a 3-1 lead on Jeremy Hazelbaker's two -run single. The Drive added to the lead on a Reymond Fuentes RBI hit in the third to make it a 4-1 game.

The GreenJackets batted around in the fifth and tied the game at four on RBI singles by Ryan Cavan, Dominguez and Sanchez. With the bases loaded, Augusta couldn't break the tie in the fifth. For the next three innings, the GreenJackets got hits out of their leadoff men in each inning but could inflict no further damage before Greenville broke the tie with the ten-run barrage that started in the seventh. Augusta left 11 men on the bases in the loss.

Chris Heston allowed four runs, one earned, in five solid innings on seven hits. He didn't walk anyone and struck out five. Chris Gloor (2-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in 1.2 following Heston. Anatanaer Batista took advantage of Greenville's late scoring to earn the win for the Drive. Batista (2-3) scattered four hits through three scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Jorge Bucardo (4-2, 1.87) takes the ball on Sunday afternoon trying to prevent his GreenJackets from dropping three in a row. Pete Ruiz (4-3, 4.66) takes the mound for the Drive in the matinee. First pitch from Greenville will come at 4:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 3:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
