Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (30-27) started strong against the Delmarva Shorebirds (23-34), shutting out their in-state rival 7-0 in the first contest of the four-game road series.
The Suns were held in check by Shorebirds starter Jesse Beal (4-4) until they broke out in the fourth. After loaded the bases with one out, Eury Perez drew a walk to bring in J.P. Ramirez from third for their first run. Jeff Kobernus followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Brett Newsome for a 2-0 lead.
Next inning, Hagerstown put three on the board against Beal. With Justin Bloxom on first and one away, J.R. Higley singled to short left. As Bloxom tried to advance to third, left fielder T.J. Baxter's throw went into the stands, awarding Bloxom home and Higley third. Next batter, Brett Newsome doubled to deep left field, scoring Higley from third. After Sandy Leon struck out, Perez reached on an infield single to second. On the play, Newsome scored from second base to give the Suns a 5-0 lead.
Paul Demny (4-1) started for the Suns, throwing five and two-thirds shutout innings, striking out five. It is Demny's third victory in his last four starts, not allowing a run in his last two outings.
Delmarva threatened in the bottom of the eighth, getting the bases loaded with two out. Rob Wort came in to replace Patrick Arnold, striking out Gary Helmick to end the inning without a run scoring.
Hagerstown was not finished as they pieced together two walks and two singles for two scores in the top of the ninth off Delmarva reliever Tony Butler. With first and second and two away, Perez singled to bring in Higley, followed by a Kobernus infield single to score Leon for a 7-0 lead, the eventual final score.
Arnold finished with two innings pitched with two strikeouts. Wort earned his fourth save in 2010 with one-and-a-third innings thrown.
Beal got the loss pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five runs with three strikeouts.
The Suns and Shorebirds will return to field for a 2:05 p.m. Sunday matinee at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium for the second contest of the four-game set.
