Waterloo Rallies Past Riders 5-4

Waterloo, Iowa- Derek Arnold scored the game winner with 4:11 left in regulation as the host Waterloo Black Hawks scored three unanswered third period goals to rally for a 5-4 win over the RoughRiders Thursday night.

Arnold fired the puck home from the top of the right wing circle to break a 4-4 deadlock just 54 seconds after the Black Hawks' Jordan Samuels-Thomas had tied the score with a drive from the high slot.

The Hawk comeback started when Nick Larson swept a rebound into the gaping net at 8:32 of the third period to narrow what had been a 4-2 Rider lead to just a single goal.

The RoughRiders had entered the third period leading 3-2 and would open up some additional breathing room just over two minutes into the period while up 5-on-3. Mike Seidel tipped Scott Winkler's shot past Waterloo goaltender Joe Howe for the Riders' third power play goal of the game.

The Riders had twice taken the lead in the second period. At 4:02 Jeff Costello converted a penalty shot to snap a 1-1 tie. Just over two minutes after Waterloo's Ben Miller knotted the score at two by sweeping in a rebound at 7:56, the Riders moved back on top while up 4-on-3 when Matt Donovan scored his second power play goal of the night.

Just as they would finish strong, the Black Hawks also got their evening off to a superb start, scoring HJHHnhjust 45 seconds into the game when Eriah Hayes tipped in a George Hughes shot.

The Riders would even the score at one at 8:29 of the first period. Donovan buried the puck from the left wing circle with just one second left on a Cedar Rapids power play.
