Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview

March 7, 2023 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Thorns in the Side

Up to this point in the season, there are four USHL teams who have three wins apiece against the Black Hawks. Waterloo takes on two of them this weekend. Friday, the Hawks visit the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05 p.m. Waterloo is 2-3-0 against Sioux Falls, and the clubs have split a pair of games at Denny Sanford Premier Center so far. Friday's game caps a three-game road stint. Back home Saturday at 6:05 p.m., Waterloo hosts the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, against whom the Hawks are also 2-3-0. The two rivals will not meet again during the 2022/23 season.

West & East

This will be the last weekend on the schedule when the Hawks face opponents from both the Eastern and Western Conferences. Waterloo is 24-8-1 against the West but just 6-7-0 versus the East. After Saturday, Waterloo's schedule includes 12 consecutive Western Conference games. The regular season will conclude April 21st and 22nd with two games against an Eastern Conference foe, the Dubuque Fighting Saints.

Latest to 100

Defenseman Patrick Geary is on the cusp of his 100th USHL game. He should reach the milestone Friday in Sioux Falls. Through 99 USHL regular season games, Geary has seven goals and 20 assists. The Michigan State recruit has a +15 plus/minus differential this season. Two of his three goals in 2022/23 have been game-winners: November 19th against the Lincoln Stars and December 9th in overtime against the Des Moines Buccaneers. He will become the ninth current Hawk with 100 games played.

Rookie on a Roll

Griffin Erdman had a three-point (one goal, two assists) weekend against Lincoln and Sioux City. His scoring versus the Stars and Musketeers pushes him to 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists) in 2022/23, which ranks sixth among USHL rookies. Erdman has been a productive two-way player for Waterloo: at +14, his plus/minus differential stands fifth among his rookie peers and also ties for fifth on the team. Erdman is one of five Black Hawks who has played in all 46 of the team's games.

Recent Games

The Black Hawks were involved in a pair of 6-2 decisions over the weekend, falling behind 2-0 each night. Friday against the Lincoln Stars, Waterloo rallied with six straight goals to claim a road victory. Garrett Schifsky scored twice and Emmett Croteau made 31 saves. The Hawks could not manage the same feat the following evening in Sioux City. Sam Rinzel and Griffin Erdman tallied goals, but Waterloo could never level the score against the Musketeers, despite outshooting their opponents 33-22.
