Settling in on the Bus
From Tuesday through Saturday, the Black Hawks will spend some length of time on the bus each day. Tuesday, Waterloo travels to meet the Omaha Lancers (22-14-6) for a 7:05 game at Ralston Arena. The teams have identical 1-0-1 records against each other. The Hawks will roll back to Young Arena before dawn Wednesday morning, then depart Thursday for Friday's matchup against the Lincoln Stars (25-13-5), who edged Waterloo 5-4 in the most recent meeting at the Ice Box January 24th. Saturday, the Hawks bus to Buccaneer Arena to visit Des Moines (13-24-5) in a 6:05 p.m. rematch one week after the teams met last Saturday in Waterloo, where the Hawks prevailed 9-2.
Another Shootout?
The only two shootouts in which Waterloo has participated this season have been against the Omaha Lancers. Omaha won 2-1 on October 15th. The Hawks prevailed 3-2 on January 28th. Gavin O'Connell was responsible for the only conversion during Waterloo's victory. Goaltender Emmett Croteau did not allow a shootout goal in three attempts he faced that night.
February Highlights
Waterloo is completing the shortest month of the year with a 4-3-1 record. Goalie Emmett Croteau was responsible for three of those wins and stopped 91 percent of the shots he faced. Garrett Schifsky produced a team-high five goals and nine points. Patrick Geary paced the Hawks with six assists. Geary's seven February points represent more than half of his total (13) for the season.
McCormick's 200-Foot Game
Hawks center Mason McCormick scored a goal and was +2 during Waterloo's Saturday win versus Des Moines. Although McCormick is currently in the middle of the pack for scoring (his 10 points in 28 games rank 16th on the team), he now leads the Black Hawks with a +8 plus/minus differential this season. The numbers harken back to McCormick's 2020/21 campaign in the North American Hockey League. Skating for the Shreveport Mudbugs, he had 22 points and was +11 in 46 games.
Recent Games
The Hawks had two impressive performances on home ice last weekend. Friday, John Waldron scored the first goal, then notched the game-winner, during a 5-3 win against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Emmett Croteau made 38 saves, the highest count during his USHL career in a victory. Waterloo followed up on Saturday with a 9-2 night against the Des Moines Buccaneers. Waldron had two more goals and two assists, while Garrett Schifsky tallied a goal and three assists among a half dozen Hawks skaters with multiple points.
