Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - Dubuque Fighting Saints defenseman Michael Feenstra has committed to Miami University of Ohio. Feenstra, who has played the fourth-most games in Fighting Saints history, has made his college choice, which includes several of his Fighting Saints teammates, both past and present.
In 172 games as a Fighting Saint, Feenstra has scored 40 points. He has been on the plus side of the ledger his entire career with a career +36 rating. Should he play out the rest of the games of the season, he will finish his Fighting Saints career with the second-most games played in the organization's history dating back to 1980. He would trail only Keegan Ford, who played 197 games in Dubuque.
Feenstra, on committing to Miami: There are many things that made Miami the right place for me. It gave me all the tools and opportunities to be successful at the next level and I was able to form a good relationship with the coaching staff right away. Miami is also a very good school academically and it will help me tremendously with life after hockey.
President of Hockey Ops/GM Kalle Larsson: Michael has been in Dubuque a long time and he has developed into a very reliable USHL defenseman. He's big, he skates well, and he can really defend. We are excited that he is going to continue his career at Miami.
Head coach Greg Brown: Michael possesses qualities that every team values in a defenseman. He can defend against an opponent's top forwards, and he transitions pucks out of his end very well. The staff at Miami recognized these attributes and we are pleased that he has accepted their offer to become a student athlete in the fall.
The Michigander will be the third Fighting Saint to commit to Miami this season, as he joins forward William Hallén and defenseman Zane Demsey. Former Saint P.J. Fletcher will enter his junior season with Feenstra, who will start his freshman season next year.
Notable former RedHawks commits in Fighting Saints history include Scott Corbett, who is in his senior season this year, Gordie Green, currently a pro with the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers, Willie Knierim, who is playing professionally with the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads, Riley Barber, who plays for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins, and Matt Caito, who plays for Leksands IF in Sweden.
The RedHawks are led by third-year head coach Chris Bergeron. Miami competes in perhaps the highest level of competition and parity in college hockey, the NCHC.
