Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
March 19, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
RoughRiders Double Vision
With only four weekends remaining on the 2018/19 United States Hockey League schedule, the Black Hawks play their closest geographical rival - the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders - twice this weekend during a home-and-home series. The clubs meet Friday at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena then Saturday in Waterloo; both games begin at 7:05 p.m. The RoughRiders have won six consecutive home games, which ties for the third-longest streak of its kind in the USHL this season. Cedar Rapids forward Liam Walsh has scored in five straight on home ice. Neither team has won a head-to-head road games in the first five meetings this season.
Cowbell "Cup-date"
Neither the Black Hawks nor the RoughRiders can clinch the Dupaco Cowbell Cup outright this weekend. However, if either team sweeps the other in regulation, that would be enough to earn a share of the trophy. Waterloo and Cedar Rapids both have ten standings points in the series; the Dubuque Fighting Saints have five. Both the Hawks and RoughRiders each have two games remaining against the Saints in the closing weeks.
Solid Sixteen
Forward Wyatt Schingoethe scored his ninth goal of the season last Saturday versus the Fargo Force. Adding 19 assists, his 28 points tie for 17th among USHL rookies. However, Schingoethe is just 16 years old. The last Black Hawks player to record more points at the same age was Shane Bowers. In 2015/16, Bowers scored 15 goals with 18 assists during his first year in the league.
Trying for 200
The Hawks seek to reach the 200-goal threshold this weekend, entering Friday's action at 195. Whenever Waterloo makes it to the double-century mark, they will surpass last season's scoring total; while winning the Anderson Cup last year, the Hawks scored 199 goals as a team. Offensive production is up across the USHL in 2018/19. Last season, four league teams achieved the 200-goal milestone. This season, there are already three, and the group could double in size just this weekend with modest efforts by the Hawks, the Tri-City Storm (currently 199) and the Sioux Falls Stampede (currently 195).
Weekly Recap
The Black Hawks played and won their only game last week. Griffin Ness broke a 2-2 third period tie, and Joe Cassetti subsequently scored a pair of goals to vault Waterloo past the Fargo Force, 5-2 on the road. Meanwhile, the Sioux Falls Stampede played twice but lost in overtime or shootout situations on each occasion. As a result, Waterloo and Sioux Falls remain tied for second place in the USHL Western Conference; both teams have now played 52 regular season games.
