Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A Third Look
The Black Hawks see two opponents for the third time this weekend, however the first two matchups against the Des Moines Buccaneers did not count. Waterloo's Friday opponent was on the exhibition schedule twice during September. The Bucs won the first get-together 7-2, but the Hawks followed up with a 6-1 decision in the rematch. Waterloo's games against the Omaha Lancers on October 24th and November 7th followed a similar pattern: Omaha took the first meeting 4-3, but Hawks returned serve, 5-1, in the replay. Friday's contest is the final game in a string of four straight at home. Saturday's road tilt ends a six-week span in which 11 of 12 games on Waterloo's schedule have been against Western Conference opponents.
Rolling Among the Leaders
Forward Nick Swaney has recorded a goal in three straight games. Friday against the Bloomington Thunder, he scored an overtime-forcing goal against the Bloomington Thunder with 8:46 remaining. With 10:51 to go on Saturday, he tallied the go-ahead - and ultimately game-winning - goal against the Lincoln Stars in a 3-2 decision. Swaney now has nine goals in 14 appearances this year, one game better than his pace from last season when he recorded nine tallies in 15 contests as an affiliate. The Minnesota-Duluth recruit's goal total is currently tied for fourth in the United States Hockey League.
High Noon at 9:30
Friday's shootout between the Black Hawks and Bloomington Thunder was the longest in the USHL this season. Cale Morris and Hayden Lavigne combined to stop 13 attempts during the seven-round affair. Bloomington prevailed with the only conversion, winning the game by an official final of 3-2. The last time Waterloo participated in a longer shootout was April 5, 2014, a nine-round affair with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. That game, which also ended 3-2, is the Hawks' most recent shootout win.
Served Up Hotte
Goaltender Drew Hotte made his first regular season appearance for the Hawks Saturday, turning away all seven shots he faced after an injury to Cale Morris. Hotte had been 1-2-1 for the Minnesota Magicians of the North American Hockey League. He made more than 30 saves in three of those appearances. Last season, he received All-Independent School League honors while attending Milton Academy in Massachusetts.
Weekly Recap
Nick Swaney, Liam Pecararo, and Yuri Terao had at least one point apiece each night as the Black Hawks played twice at home, falling Friday to the Bloomington Thunder, 3-2 in a shootout, then winning Saturday, also 3-2, against the Omaha Lancers.
