Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - USA Hockey announced the roster to the U.S. Junior Select Team on Tuesday afternoon. That roster includes two Dubuque Fighting Saints players. Forward Willie Knierim (Miami (OH)) and defenseman Spenser Young (Providence) will compete in the World Junior A Challenge in Whitby, Ontario from December 13-19.
Knierim, a second-year player in Dubuque, most recently represented the United States in the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. Knierim added three assists at the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo, N.Y. The Skokie, Ill. native was named a B-ranked skater according to NHL Central Scouting in September. This season, he has scored three goals and four assists in 13 games.
Young, also in his second season with the Fighting Saints, emerged onto the scene as Dubuque's top-scoring defenseman. Earlier this season, the native of Brentwood, N.H. extended a seven-game point streak. Like Knierim, Young also represented the United States at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The puck-moving defenseman has accumulated one goal and nine assists in 14 games.
"We're really excited for those guys. Any time you can play for your country it's a big deal," Fighting Saints head coach Jason Lammers said. "We're really excited for them representing our organization. Those are two guys that do a great job for us."
These two Fighting Saints will play a role on a United States team that has won gold at this tournament six times in the past eight years, including gold at the 2014 World Junior A Challenge.
The Fighting Saints return to action this weekend to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks in a rematch of the 2015 Eastern Conference Final. Follow all of the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, superhits106.com, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, FASTHockey on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
