Waterloo Black Hawks Weekly Preview
March 19, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Force Friday, Saints Saturday
The Waterloo Black Hawks have become thoroughly familiar with the Dubuque Fighting Saints and Fargo Force in 2013. Since the beginning of the calendar year, eight of the Hawks' 25 games - 32% - have been matchups with one of the two opponents. Going forward beginning this weekend, an even higher percentage of the remaining schedule - four of ten contests - will be against the Force or Saints. Past precedent suggests the games will be close. Of the nine games Waterloo has played against Fargo or Dubuque this season, six have been settled by one goal; three of the Hawks' four 2012/13 shootouts have been against one of these clubs.
Hinostroza Hikes Point Total
Vince Hinostroza's assist on Waterloo's first goal against the Lincoln Stars Friday changes his place in the Black Hawks' junior-era record books. It was his 121st regular season point, tying him for 11th all-time with Joe Pavelski. It was also the 70th assist of Hinostroza's career, making him the ninth modern Black Hawk to reach that milestone. Due to an injury, the Notre Dame recruit's appearance Friday was his first since February 2nd.
Shorty by Stepan
Zach Stepan scored a shorthanded goal last Tuesday in Chicago, breaking a 1-1 tie and helping the Black Hawks to a 4-1 victory. The shorty was the sixth by Waterloo this season, a total which ranks sixth in the USHL. It was the first time a shorthanded goal has proved to be the game-winner for the Hawks since December 4, 2010, when Tyler Zepeda delivered the decisive tally in a 4-2 victory versus Team USA while the Hawks were down one man. However, shorthanded goals have been a harbinger of success throughout 2012/13; Waterloo is 5-1-0 during games in which they have recorded a goal while penalty killing.
Sheehy's Second
Affiliate forward Tyler Sheehy was credited with his second goal of the season Friday. His first USHL marker came against the Sioux City Musketeers on November 10th. Between fall and spring stints with the Hawks, Sheehy led Burnsville High School with 49 points (22 goals and 27 assists) in 28 games. In 2011/12, Sheehy played seven games for Waterloo with one assist. He is committed to Ohio State University.
Weekly Recap
Waterloo claimed a road victory versus the Chicago Steel last Tuesday, winning by a 4-1 count. Ryan Papa scored twice during the contest, while Cal Petersen made 31 saves. Both Papa and Petersen played midget hockey in Chicago for the nearby Chicago Young Americans program. Back on home ice Friday, the Hawks traded the lead with the Lincoln Stars before the visitors prevailed 6-4. Papa paced Waterloo with a goal and an assist, while Eric Scheid had four points for the Stars.
