Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Special Teams Stats
Coming off two power play goals in eight chances last weekend, the Black Hawks continue to lead the USHL in power play effectiveness (26.7%). This week, Waterloo will meet teams at opposite ends of the penalty-killing spectrum. The Des Moines Buccaneers are 16th of 16 teams in power play goals allowed, escaping unscathed from just 74.2% of shorthanded situations. Over two meetings, the Hawks have two power play goals in six chances versus Des Moines. After visiting the Bucs Wednesday, Waterloo matches up against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for the first times this season on Thursday and Saturday. The RoughRiders lead the USHL with a 91.4% penalty kill percentage and are one of three teams averaging fewer than 15 penalty minutes per game.
Teddy Bear Toss Trends
The annual Teddy Bear Toss will begin Thursday after the Black Hawks' first goal. Over the last ten Thanksgivings, the first goal has been delayed until the second period only three times, and not later than 13:10. The fastest Teddy Bear Toss in that time was in 2005, when Matt Arhontas scored after just 25 seconds. Four of the past five years, the goal has been scored by a veteran, and by a defenseman in three of those five.
Friedman File
Rookie Mark Friedman has the longest point streak by a defenseman in the USHL this season. The still-active run covers the last seven games. In that time, Friedman has accumulated three goals and five assists. Now with nine points, Friedman is tied with teammate Victor Newell for eighth in league scoring among defensemen.
First Quarter
Last Saturday's matchup versus the Sioux City Musketeers was the 16th of 64 on the schedule, officially closing the first quarter of the season. Thus far, the Hawks lead the USHL with 70 goals, rank first on the power play, and are third in shorthanded scoring. Waterloo also paces the league with 35.7 shots on goal per game and three shutouts. Individually, Taylor Cammarata, Justin Kloos, and Zach Stepan all rank among the league's top ten point producers. Eamon McAdam is tied for the top save percentage (93.3%).
Weekly Recap
The Black Hawks were unable to pull ahead of the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday after recovering from two second period deficits. The visitors kept out of reach during a frantic third period, edging Waterloo 8-6, led by USHL Forward of the Week Joseph Gambardella, who had three goals and two assists. The Hawks found themselves in a similar situation Saturday versus the Sioux City Musketeers, but third period scores by Vince Hinostroza and Taylor Cammarata pushed Waterloo in front for a 3-2 victory. Cal Petersen made 26 saves to deliver his fourth career win in four appearances against the Muskies.
