Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - After taking the weekend series in Quebec against the Capitales, Washington welcomed the Ottawa Titans to town for the first time in Titans' franchise history Wednesday after a postponement Tuesday forced the two teams to play two games at Wild Things Park. Ottawa spoiled the home crowd, taking both games in the twinbill, 9-2 and 5-3.
Ottawa started the first game of the doubleheader hot as the Titans scored in the first on an RBI double by Jackie Urbaez and continued that energy throughout the game. Ottawa got an additional three more after the top of the second inning highlighted by a two-run homer by AJ Wright.
In the bottom of the second, Andrew Czech sparked the Wild Things for a moment with his seventh home run of the season, getting Washington on the board and making it 4-1. That, however, was all Washington would get until a Scotty Dubrule sacrifice fly in the seventh before the game's conclusion.
Wright hit his second two-run shot in the top of the fourth, pushing the lead to five runs for Ottawa. That lead grew when Sicnarf Loopstok brought the score to 9-1 with a three-run shot in the sixth.
Tommy Caufield made his Wild Things and pro debut tonight. He not only got his first professional hit, but first run scored as he was plated on the aforementioned sac fly.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Wild Things took the lead 1-0. Back-to-back singles with no outs in the bottom of the second led to an RBI by Robert Chayka on a double. Also in the second inning, a two-RBI single by Nick Gotta made it 3-0.
Titans' catcher Brandon Bannon hit a triple and eventually scored the first run of the game for Ottawa, leaving them trailing by just two after the top of the third. Bannon came across on a groundout by the debuting Kanta Kobayashi. In the top of the fourth, Ottawa's AJ Wright hit his third home run of the night, cutting the deficit to one.
An RBI single by Taylor Wright brought the game to a tie in the sixth inning, before Wright scored on an RBI single by Bannen to give the Titans a lead they wouldn't relinquish. A fifth run in the game scored for the Titans on an error by Justin Goossen-Brown.
A scoreless seventh inning sealed the deal for Ottawa as they left tonight with a clean sweep of the doubleheader over the Wild Things, 5-3.
Ottawa and Washington will meet in the series finale tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Justin Showalter will start for Washington and be opposed by Zac Westcott for Ottawa. It's a Coors Light Brew Crew Thirsty Thursday, presented by the Molson Coors Beverage Company. It's also Summer St. Paddy's. Gates open at 6:00.
