Winston-Salem, NC â The Winston-Salem Warthogs (23-17) kicked off a highly anticipated series with Kinston, with a 8-1 win at Ernie Shore Field Friday night. The Warthogs coming into the game led the Indians by 2 ½ games. With the win the Warthogs are now 3 ½ games up in the Carolina League's Southern Division. Warthogs LHP starter Ryan Wing improved to 4-1 on the year. Wing tossed five innings, giving up one run on only three hits. Kinston LHP starter Mariano Gomez dropped to 3-2 in the loss. Gomez gave up seven runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Kinston took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Willy Tavaras tripled to begin the game and scored on an RBI single by Brian Wright.
The Warthogs took a 3-1 lead with a three run bottom of the first. Ruddy Yan doubled to left an scored on an RBI single by Mike Spidale. Spidale went to second on a Jeremy Reed. Spidale and Reed advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Brian Becker walked to load the bases. Daylan holt hit into a fielders' choice at second base, scoring Spidale from third. Reed would score the final run of the first when Casey Rogowski hit into an RBI fielders' choice ground out.
The Warthogs increased their lead to 5-1 in the third when Brian Becker launched his team leading eighth homerun of the year to left field. Yan and Tommy Nicholson singled in the fourth and scored on a Reed two-run double down the right field line. The Warthogs scored their final run in the fifth when Tommy Nicholson hit an RBI triple.
The second game of the three game series will be Saturday night at 7:15pm. The first 1,000 fans will receive a old timers Winston-Salem Cardinals cap. The Warthogs will send RHP Kris Honel (4-3, 3.35), while the Indians will throw RHP Jim Ed Warden (0-1, 15.00). The play by play will be heard on 600/1200 WSJS.
