Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - With two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Winston-Salem shortstop Victor Mercedes made a diving scoop and throw on a deflected slow roller to end the game. With the bags packed full of Blue Rocks and the Warthogs hanging on to a 2-1 lead, Wilmington third baseman Andrew Pickney ripped a liner the took the glove off the hand of Warthogs closer Fernando Hernandez. With the ball trickling behing the mound, Mercedes charged, plucked the ball with his bare hand and fired to first in time to secure the Warthogs third consecutive win.
Harrell (6-1), who was recently selected to the Carolina League All-Star team, pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out three. The Warthogs bullpen closed the door once again, pitching three scoreless innings of relief as Hernandez earned his seventh save of the season.
Wilmington got on the board early when they loaded the bases in the top of the second inning and scored their only run on an RBI sacrifice fly by Scott White. The Warthogs tied the game in the fourth when Mercedes led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a single by Chris Kelly. Kelly, who finished the game 1-for-4 with an RBI, will join Harrell as the only two Warthogs selected to the Carolina League All-Star team.
The Warthogs took the lead the next inning when Chris Amador hit a two-out single to score Jose De Los Santos. Dewon Day, Jay Marshall and Hernandez relieved Harrell after the sixth and made the 2-1 score stand, as the Warthogs have won the first two games of this four game series.
Game three will be played at 7 PM on Saturday at Ernie Shore Field. Taking the mound for the Warthogs will be RHP Jack Egbert (5-3, 2.51), and he will face Wilmington RHP Gary Galvez (2-2, 3.19).
