Kip Wells To Make Rehab Start in Lynchburg on Saturday
June 9, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
(Lynchburg, Va.) - Pittsburgh Pirates' starting pitcher Kip Wells is expected to join the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday, June 10th, on a major league rehabilitation assignment.
Wells has not pitched for Pittsburgh this season after undergoing surgery in early March to repair a blocked artery in his right arm. Wells will make his first start of the season against the Salem Avalanche at Calvin Falwell Field beginning at 7:05 pm.
Wells is expected to make three stops on his rehab tour of the minors, with scheduled starts at Double-A Altoona on June 15th and Triple-A Indianapolis on June 20th. Wells will be the first major leaguer to rehab with the Hillcats since outfielder Adrian Brown in 1999. Coincidentally, 1999 was the last time Kip Wells appeared in Lynchburg. Wells started on opening day at City Stadium as a member of the Winston- Salem Warthogs, taking the loss in that game.
The 29-year old Wells is in his fifth season in the Pirates' system after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago White Sox in December 2001. Since joining Pittsburgh, the Texas native has posted a 35-48 record and a 4.07 ERA.
Saturday's game at Lynchburg City Stadium against the Salem Avalanche will be played at 7:05pm, and tickets are available. The meeting between the central Virginia rivals will be followed by a fireworks display. For ticket information, visit www.lynchburghillcats. com, or call 434-528-1144.
