TONIGHT'S GAME:

The Hillcats continue their final home series of the first half with the second of four games against their Central Virginia rival, the Salem Avalanche...Last night, Lynchburg squandered a late two-run lead in a 3-2 extra innings loss to Salem...It was the Cats first extra innings loss of the year (5-1)...With the loss, the Potomac Nationals moved to within 1.0-game of Lynchburg for first place in the Northern Division...All four Northern Division squads are seperated by a total of 4.5-games in the standings ... Currently, every team in the division posts a losing record...The only time a team advanced to the CL post-season without an above .500 record was in 1985...The Winston-Salem Spirits captured the Southern Division first-half crown with a record of 35-35...Lynchburg is in the midst of playing 15 of their last 19 games in the first half on the road...They are 5-4 to begin that stretch...In addition, all 19 games are against Southern Division squads...

TONIGHT'S OPPONENT

- Barthmaier, 22, is a 6-4, 210-pound right-hander selected by Houston in the 13th round of the 2003 draft out of Roswell (GA) HS. The Atlanta native had a stellar 2005 campaign, posting an 11-6 record with a 2.27 ERA (25 gs, 134.2 ip, 108 h, 41 r, 34 er, 55 bb, 142 k) in Lexington (A, SAL). His 2.27 ERA was the 2nd best mark in the South Atlantic League and 6th best in all of minor league baseball. In 2004 with Greenville (A, Appalachian) he went 4-3 with a 3.78 ERA. Entering this season, he has a career mark of 17-10 with a 2.72 ERA. He was tabbed by Baseball America as the 4th best prospect in the Houston Astros system prior to the 2006 campaign.

NEWS AND NOTES:

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Thursday that RHP Kip Wells (see page 6) is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday...Wells has been out since late-February, when he was diagnosed with a circulatory condition in his throwing arm...He had corrective surgery in early March...The 29-year old Wells is in his fifth season in the Pirates system after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago (AL) in 2001...The last major leaguer to rehab with the Hillcats was OF Adrian Brown in 1999...Brown batted 6-18, .333-0-1 in four Carolina League games...The Hillcats have gone 11-6 in their last 17 games...INF Steve Pearce connected on his 16th HR of the season last night...He is tied for the Minor League lead in that category...In addition, his 53 RBI are tied for the third highest total in the minors...The Pittsburgh Pirates selected RHP Brad Lincoln with their first selection in the amateur draft on Tuesday...Lincoln, 21, went 12-2 with a 1.69 ERA (127.2ip/24er) in 17 starts this season as a junior with the University of Houston while striking out 151 batters...Lincoln joins Paul Maholm (2003), Byran Bullington (2002) and John Van Benschoten (2001) as the fourth college pitcher to be selected by the Pirates in the first round since 2001...
