Carolina League All-Star Team Announced

SALEM, VA -- The 2006 Carolina League All-Star Team will be led by six players from the Kinston Indians (ML affiliate: Cleveland) as they play host to the California League All-Stars on Tuesday, June 27th at Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium in Salem, VA.
League All-Stars come from all eight Carolina League ballclubs, including three players each from the Frederick Keys (ML affiliate: Baltimore) and Lynchburg HillCats (ML affiliate: Pittsburgh); two players each from Potomac (ML affiliate: Washington), Wilmington (ML affiliate: Boston) and Winston-Salem (ML affiliate: Chicago White Sox); one representative from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (ML affiliate: Atlanta). The host Salem Avalanche, affiliate of the 2005 National League Champion Houston Astros, round out the All-Star Roster with four representatives.
The Salem Avalanche Coaching Staff will lead the Carolina League in the bi-coastal showcase of the top prospects in Advanced Class-A professional baseball from 18 Major League affiliates. Avalanche skipper Jim Pankovits will be joined by Salem Pitching Coach Stan Boroski, Coach Chuck Carr and Trainer Eric Montague.
"The City of Salem has not hosted an All-Star Game since 1992 back at the old ballpark," said John Hopkins, Carolina League President. "I am pleased that [Avalanche Owner] Kelvin Bowles and his team have the opportunity to showcase the Carolina League, the City of Salem and their first-class facility."
The 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game is being played for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. The fist match-up ended in a 2-2 tie after 11 innings in a game hosted by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in June of 1996. The Carolina League leads the all-time series 4-3, with two ties (1996, 2002). This game will mark the first time that the State of Virginia has hosted this ballgame.
"It's exciting to be able to manage the top players in the entire League," said Pankovits. "We've been facing these guys all season long, and it is nice to have a few of them on our side for a night."
The 2006 HCA Virginia Carolina League vs. California League All-Star Game is presented by Lewis-Gale Medical Center. The ballpark will open to ticketed fans on Tuesday, June 27 at 2:30PM for the Coca-Cola All-Star FanFest. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:07PM.
