WINSTON-SALEM, NC -Paulo Orlando lined a two-run single with two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth inning to power Winston-Salem past Kinston 6-5 in the series opener on Saturday night at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs watched a 4-1 lead evaporate into a one-run deficit in the late innings before securing the lead and handing the ball to Kanekoa Texeira in the ninth.

Texeira pitched around a two-out error to collect his Carolina League best 19th save of the season. Matt Zaleski surrendered the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, but garnered the win for the Warthogs, who improved to 18-10 in one-run contests.

The Warthogs took an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Josh Fields singled with one out and a double by Brandon Allen put runners on second and third. Next, John Shelby III hit into a fielder's choice that retired Fields trying to score from third. While trying to keep Shelby III close at first, Kinston starting pitcher Carlton Smith threw away a pickoff attempt, which allowed Allen to score. Brett Bonvechio followed with an RBI double to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.

Shelby III extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI double in the third inning to give the Warthogs a 3-0 lead. Kinston put a run on the board in the fourth when Nick Weglarz led off the inning with a solo home run of Matt Long. Winston-Salem equaled the run in the bottom half of the inning when Joe Persichina smacked a double that brought Greg Paiml across the plate.

Weglarz struck again with a solo shot in the sixth inning to trim the Warthogs lead to 4-2. The bullpen for Winston-Salem was not able to hold the lead as Henry Mabee walked a pair and surrendered a two-double to Johnny Drennen in the seventh inning that knotted the game at four.

Kinston took the lead in the eighth inning when Weglarz, who went 4-for-4 with two home runs, doubled to start the inning. A Jared Goedart sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third and a sac fly by Carlos Rivero handed the Indians a 5-4 lead.

These two Southern Division rivals will square off in the second of this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Ernie Shore Field. The Warthogs will hand the ball to RHP John Ely (3-8, 4.66), while the Indians are expected to start RHP Jeanmar Gomez (2-7, 5.87). The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
