
Warthogs lose at Potomac

Woodbridge, VA - The Winston-Salem Warthogs (37-31, 76-62) lost at Potomac, 5-4, Saturday night. The Warthogs are now tied with Salem atop the southern division with two games left. Warthogs' starter, Ray Liotta, suffered the loss, his second. Liotta gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits in seven innings. Potomac reliever, Devin Perrin, improved to 3-7. Perrin pitched 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief.
Potomac took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Ian Desmond was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Desmond scored on an RBI double by Frank Diaz.
The Warthogs tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth on a Noah Hall solo home run, his 26th of the season.
Potomac retook a 2-1 lead on a solo home run by Josh Whitesell in the bottom of the fourth.
The Warthogs tied the game at 2 in the top of the fifth. Carlos Lee led off with a double and Mike Myers walked. Gustavo Molina reached first when his bunt was thrown to third to erase Lee. Ricardo Nanita walked to load the bases with one out. Robert Valido drove in Myers from third with a sac fly to center.
Potomac took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Doc Brooks walked and Ender Chavez reached on an infield single. Shawn Norris walked to load the bases. After a pop out by Ian Desmond, Frank Diaz grounded a ball to third base that Micah Schnurstein fielded and threw away at home plate. Two runs came around to score.
The Warthogs tied the game at 4 with two runs in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Leo Daigle singled and Tom Collaro walked. Micah Schnurstein followed with a two-run doubled into left.
Potomac scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth. Kory Casto led off with a single against Ray Liotta. Soloman Manriquez followed with a singled. Fabio Castro came into pitch and walked Josh Whitesell to load the bases. Orionny Lopez lifted Castro and induced Greg Thissen into a pot out to short. With one out, Doc Brooks grounded to short, Robert Valido threw to second for a force out and Brooks beat the relay throw to first. Casto scored in from third.
The Warthogs continue their series at Potomac Sunday night at 6:35pm. RHP Lance Broadway (1-2, 4.01) will toss for Winston-Salem. LHP Brett Price (9-13, 4.65) will pitch for the Nationals. All the play by play will be heard on the internet at www.warthogs.com.
