Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE --- Mario Delgado and Nate Spears both homered for the Frederick Keys, as they defeated the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 7-6, at Frawley Stadium before a crowd of 6,748 on Saturday night. The loss was the third in a row for Wilmington.
After taking a 1-0 lead off Wilmington starter Luis Mendoza (4-9) on a double play grounder in the fourth inning, the Keys poured on the offense. Travis Brown tripled in a run in the fifth inning and was sent home on an RBI single from Jeff Fiorentino.
One inning later, Delgado led off with his 26th home run of the season, a line drive to right field that skipped off the top of the wall and over to make it a 5-0 game. Dustin Yount followed two batters later with a double, and was brought home on a single by Mike Russell.
Meanwhile, Frederick starter Carlos Jan was frustrating Wilmington batters. He did not allow a run until the sixth inning, when Iggy Suarez plated two runs with a two-out single. Jan (5-2) went five and two-thirds innings, allowing those two runs on seven hits, while striking out seven.
In the top of the seventh, Nate Spears launched a long, two-run home run to right field off Felix Romero to give Frederick a 7-2 lead. The homer was the sixth of the season for Spears.
Wilmington scratched across three in the bottom of the eighth inning off reliever Dave Haehnel, including a two-run double by Bret LeVier. Claudio Arias' ninth-inning homer, a solo shot off Marino Salas, made it a one-run game, but Salas struck out Ian Bladergroen to end the ball game. Salas earned his 15th save of the season, striking out the side in the final inning.
The Blue Rocks and Keys will play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium, beginning at 1:35 p.m. Both games will be seven-inning affairs. For tickets or more information, call (302) 888-BLUE, or visit the official website of the Wilmington Blue rocks, www.bluerocks.com.
