July 6, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Winston-Salem, NC - A night after Winston-Salem pounded out 18 hits and 12 runs, the Potomac Nationals pitching staff limited the Warthogs to one run and five hits on their way to a 3-1 victory in front of 1,762 fans at Ernie Shore Field. Nationals starter Collin Balester (4-3) earned the win, while pitching seven strong innings, and the bullpen tossed two hitless innings to preserve the victory.
Winston-Salem (8-6) wasted a strong outing from starting pitcher Wes Whisler (8-6), who tossed seven innings and allowed only two runs on eight hits while striking out four, in losing game two of their three-game series with the Nationals. The Warthogs took an early 1-0 lead on RBI sacrifice fly from Cory Haggerty to plate Sean Smith in the third inning.
The Nationals responded in the sixth inning when Tony Blanco ripped a double to right field to score Roger Bernadina and Devin Ivany to give Potomac a 2-1 lead. They added a run in the ninth inning on an RBI single from Marcos Yepez to go ahead 3-1. Jaun Ovalles, who pitched for Winston-Salem last year, worked the ninth inning for Potomac to collect his fifth save of the year.
The final game of the three-game series will take place at 7 PM on Friday at Ernie Shore Field. Taking the mound for Winston-Salem will be RHP Adam Russell, and he will face Indians LHP Jon Felfoldi.
The game will be broadcast live on www.warthogs.com.
