Keys split Camp Day doubleheader with Pelicans

Frederick, MD -- The Pelicans chased Radhames Liz early in game one to win 6-2, but the Keys stormed back to take Game Two, 6-2 in front of the Camp Day crowd of 6465.

In game one the Keys got off to a fast start as Pete Maestrales, Jake Duncan and Nolan Reimold led the game off with three consecutive singles. Maestrales scored the Keys first run on the Reimold single and Duncan later scored when Mario Delgado grounded into a double play. The Keys would manage just one more hit after the first.

Myrtle Beach exploded against Radhames Liz in the top of the second scoring their first runs against him in two tries. Carl Loadenthal got the Pelicans started with a two-run home run over the right field wall. Mark Jurich scored later on a wild pitch from Liz.

The Pelicans added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. JC Holt singled to drive in Steven Doetsch. A batter later Matt Young doubled to drive in two runs to help Myrtle Beach cruise to a 6-2 win.

Liz (6-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 2.0 innings of work.

Luis Atilano (4-7) earned the victory tossing 7.0 complete innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

In game two the Keys again struck first, breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning, when Tripper Johnson crossed the plate on a ground out. Brian Bock later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Tucker.

Mark Jurich singled to drive in Van Pope in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead in half.

The Keys put two more on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mario Delgado and Tripper Johnson each had RBI singles to give the Keys a 4-1 advantage.

Carlos Duran doubled to drive in Bock in the bottom of the fifth and later scored on a groundout from Reimold to extend the Keys lead to five runs.

Jurich would strike again for the Pelicans in the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run off Matt Bruback. But that would be the last offense Myrtle Beach could manage.

Matt Bruback (1-1) earned the win allowing two runs on two hits over 6.0 innings. Rommie Lewis came on to throw a scoreless inning of relief for the Keys.

Kelvin Villa took the loss, allowing six runs, five earned on six hits over 5.0 innings.

KEYNOTES: C Sandy Madera left during Game One in the bottom of the sixth inning after he was hit in the hand by a pitch. The pitch was the second one that hit Madera in the game.
