Winston-Salem, NC - The wet weather and lightning arrived at Ernie Shore Field in the seventh inning forcing the final game of the four-game series between Wilmington and Winston-Salem to be called off. Wilmington was ahead 2-1 at the time of the stoppage and will be awarded the victory.
Warthogs starter Michael Moat (2-3) gave up two runs in the first inning and that would prove to be enough support for his counterpart for Wilmington, Tommy Hottovy (5-5), who allowed only one unearned run to earn the victory. Hottovy has won all three starts against the Warthogs this season and has yet to allow an earned run in 17 innings of work against Winston-Salem.
The Warthogs only run came on a Sean Smith triple. As Smith was sliding into third, the relay throw from shortsop Jed Lowrie sailed into the Blue Rock dugout allowing Smith to advance and score. It was not enough as Hottovy shut down the Warthogs bats, tossing six innings and giving up five hits while striking out four.
The Warthogs have Monday off before playing four games in three days against the Frederick Keys. The series opener will take place at Ernie Shore Field on Tuesday at 7 PM.
Notes: Kinston defeated Myrtle Beach to win the Southern Division of the Carolina League in the first half of the season.
