TONIGHT'S GAME: The Hillcats play their final home game of the first half seeking to salvage a series split against the Salem Avalanche...Last night, Pittsburgh Pirates' RHP Kip Wells (1-0) dominated in six innings of shutout baseball as the Cats bested the Avs, 2-0..The win, coupled with a Potomac Nationals extra-innings loss moved Lynchburg back into sole possession of first place by one-half game...The Cats are just 6-8 in series finales this season but remarkably have won five consecutive series enders...
FIRST HALF RACE: Currently all four Northern Division squads are mathematically alive for a playoff berth with just 5.0-games seperating first and last place...Interestingly, every team in the division posts a losing record...The only time a team advanced to the CL post-season without an above .500 record was in 1985...The Winston-Salem Spirits captured the Southern Division first-half crown with a record of 35- 35...Lynchburg is in the midst of playing 15 of their last 19 games in the first half on the road...They are 6- 5 to begin that stretch...In addition, all 19 games are against Southern Division squads...
LAST NIGHT: Pittsburgh Pirates' RHP Kip Wells (see page 6) made his first appearance of the year in a rehab start for the Lynchburg Hillcats...Wells had been out since late-February, when he was diagnosed with a circulatory condition in his throwing arm...He had corrective surgery in early March...The 29-year old Wells is in his fifth season in the Pirates system after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago (AL) in 2001...The last major leaguer to rehab with the Hillcats was RHP Ryan Vogelsong in 2002...Wells is scheduled to make a second rehab assignment with Altoona (AA, Eastern League) on Thursday night at Blair County Ballpark against the Harrisburg Senators (Washington)....
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Chad Reineke, 24, is a 6-6, 210-pound right-hander selected by Houston in the 13th round of the 2004 draft out of the University of Miami (OH). The Defiance, Ohio native posted a 10-8 mark with a 3.52 ERA (42 g, 11 gs, 102.1 ip, 84 h, 46 r, 40 er, 49 bb, 108 k) last year with Lexington (A, SAL). In his initial pro campaign, he went 1-2 with a 2.45 ERA (23 g, 0 gs, 36.2 ip, 27 h, 13 r, 10 er, 23 bb, 52 k). In 12 starts this season, he has failed to last 5.0 innings just once and has gone 7.0 or more innings on four occassions. He was recently selected as one of four Salem Avalanche to participate in the Carolina League-California League All-Star game on June 27th at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium...
ALL STARS ANNOUNCED: Three Hillcats were named to the 2006 Carolina League All-Star team on Friday...The three Hillcats are INF Brian Bixler, OF Nyjer Morgan and RHPWardell Starling...The Carolina League-California League All-Star game will be played at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium on Tuesday, June 27th...The Kinston Indians, with the league's best record at 42-19, will send 6 representatives to the contest...2006 marks the 11th overall meeting between the two leagues and the first time the clash has been held in Virginia...The Carolina League holds a 4-3-2 advantage over the Cal League in the annual game that began in 1996...
