Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - As the rain vacated Ernie Shore Field on Thursday afternoon, the Winston-Salem Warthogs (9-10) offense moved in and they never relented. The Warthogs pounded the Frederick Keys 19-2 in front of 1,759 fans and racked up season highs in hits and runs.

Frederick initiated the scoring in the top of the first inning when Paco Figueroa was hit by a pitch from Warthogs starter Adam Russell. Jarod Rine followed with a bunt single and Nolan Reimold added another base hit to score Figueroa and take the early lead 1-0.

It did not take long for the Warthogs to answer; Chris Kelly, who finished the night 4-for-5, with three runs scored and four RBI's, hit a sacrifice fly to score Victor Mercedes and knot the score at one. The next inning, the Warthogs would take a 3-1 lead on 2-run double by Sean Smith. Smith, who went 4-for-6 at the plate, also added two RBI's.

The Warthogs broke the game wide open in their half of the fourth inning when Josh Hansen would bring Smith home on a double to the right field wall. Kelly followed with a two-run blast to put the Warthogs ahead 6-1. After the Keys added a run in the fifth inning, Winston-Salem added four more runs in the sixth on RBI base hits by Hansen, Cook and Rod Allen Jr. to make the score 10-2.

The floodgates officially opened in the seventh inning when the Warthogs scored eight runs. After three consecutive singles by Garrett Guest, Smith and Mercedes, Hansen walked to push the first run across. With the bases loaded, Kelly singled, David Cook walked and Donny Lucy reached on an error to make the score 14-2. Allen Jr. followed with a two-run double, Jose De Los Santos singled and Guest hit an RBI groundout giving the Warthogs an 18-2 advantage. A solo homerun by Josh Hansen in the eight capped the scoring for the night.

Russell (2-1) picked up the win after going five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six. David Haehnel (0-1) got the loss for the Keys giving up three earned runs in three innings. Frederick reliever Russell Petrick allowed five earned runs in only 2/3 of an inning.

The Warthogs look to keep their offensive momentum as they travel to Wilmington to play game one of their three-game series with the Blue Rocks on Friday at 7 PM.
