TODAY'S GAME:

The Hillcats conclude a four-game series against the Kinston Indians seeking to salvage a series split at Grainger Stadium...The Hillcats defeated the Indians on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 2-1...The win snaps a 3-game losing streak that had matched their longest losing streak of the year...With the win, Lynchburg remains just 0.5-games back of first place in the Northern Division...All 4 Northern Division squads are seperated by a total of just 1.0-game in the standings...Despite the loss yesterday, Kinston still possesses a stellar 10-3 home mark....The two opponents on this road trip, Kinston and Myrtle Beach, have a combined 19-6 home record...The Hillcats are winless on the year in series finales, posting an 0-4 mark...

TODAY'S MATCHUP

- RHP Clayton Hamilton (see page 4) makes his first start since April 16th against RHP Joe Ness, who has not allowed more than 2 earned runs in any of his first 3 outings.

- Ness, 22, is a 6-5, 230-pound right-hander selected by Cleveland in the 4th round of the 2005 draft out of Ball State University. The Indiana native spent 2005 with Mahoning Valley (A, NYPL) and compiled a 4-2 record with a 1.67 ERA (59.1 ip, 52 h, 15 r, 11 er, 19 bb, 68 k). Ness was selected with the 184th overall selection, the ninth-highest selection in Ball State history. A 2005 All-Mid-American Conference Second Team selection, Ness finished the season with a 5-5 overall record as the Cardinals' No. 1 starter on the mound.

Remarkably, that total equaled the Cats HR total through each of the first 17 games the season...The Hillcats record for HRs in a game is 5, done twice, and most recently on 4/27/05 at Kinston...Mike Carlin went 0-for-4 yesterday...The slugger hadreached base safely in each of his first 18 games this season (.300-4-19)...Dating back to last season, Carlin had reached base safely in 29 consecutive games...Brian Bixler has reached base safely in 10 straight games (12-34, .353-0-3)...Nyjer Morgan, Brad Rea and Brad Correll eached had multi-hit games yesterday...Derek Hankins went 5.0 innings and allowed just one run in picking up his first win of the year...Hillcats starters have lasted at least 5.0 innings in 14 of the last 15 games...The Cats are 8-7 over that stretch...
