Nats kept off board by Blue Rocks
April 27, 2006 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, Va. -- Potomac's bats were silenced pretty much all night as were Wilmington's, but timely hitting came through as the Blue Rocks scored twice in the fifth to take the final game of the current series 2-0.
Iggy Suarez (1-for-4) doubled Jon de Vries (1-for-3) to third to set up a sacrifice fly by Jeff Corsaletti (1-for-2) and an RBI-double by Bryan Pritz (1-for-4) which provided the only two runs of the game.
Both teams threatened to add runs but were held off by the starters and bullpens.
Wilmington (10-11) was able to put runners on second in six innings while Potomac (9-10) had scoring opportunities only three times.
Marcos Yepez tried to get something started in the fourth with a solid single to left but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Nationals had runners on second and third with two out in the sixth, but Brandon Powell couldn't pull the trigger to get them home. The Nats had two more runners on in the ninth but Edgardo Baez flew out to right to end the game.
Luis Mendoza (3-1) struck out seven over six innings, allowing three hits. Clint Everts (0-2) struck out four and allowed the game's only two earned runs, both scoring after Thomas Wilson was summoned from the bullpen.
Potomac will now take on defending Carolina League champion, Frederick, who was slammed hard by Winston-Salem 19-2. The Keys will make an eight-hour, over-night ride up to Woodbridge to open a three-game set with the Nationals Friday night.
The Nationals still maintain partial hold on first place in the Northern Division as they are now tied with Lynchburg at 9-10 who was idle. Wilmington (10-11) is in first place by two thousandths of a percentage point and Frederick is a half game behind all.
In the upcoming home stand, all kids get to run the bases following the 7:05 p.m. game Friday night and then again after the 1:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon game which also features Autograph Sunday. Saturday night, Screech from the Washington Nationals will be at the stadium with fireworks following the 7:05 p.m. contest.
