Warthogs Clinch Playoff Berth, Pound Keys 12-4

FREDERICK, MD - The Winston-Salem Warthogs clinched the second half playoff berth with a 12-4 victory over the Frederick Keys on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium. The Warthogs offense erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning on the way to their 14th win in the last 17 games and first postseason berth since 2005.

Greg Paiml finished with three hits and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle while Francisco Hernandez tallied a season-high 5 RBI, including a three-run home run in the decisive eighth inning as the Warthogs collected 14 hits for the game.

The Warthogs grabbed control early with a pair of runs in the first inning off Pedro Beato. Joe Persichina began the rally with a one-out ripple and scored on a double from John Shelby III. After Brett Bonvechio walked, Salvador Sanchez singled home Shelby to put Winston-Salem in front 2-0. They would add to their lead in the second inning when Greg Paiml led off with a solo home run.

Frederick roared back to tie the game with three runs off John Ely in the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Tripp connected on a two-run homer and Miguel Abreu floated a two-out RBI single into center field to knot the score at three.

Winston-Salem jumped back in front in the fourth inning when Paiml tripled with one out and scored on a Francisco Hernandez ground out for a 4-3 lead. Those two would combine for another run in the seventh inning when Paiml doubled and scored on a Hernandez single for a 5-3 cushion.

Ely (10-12) tossed five innings for the Warthogs and allowed three runs on four hits to garner the win. He was won 7 of his last 8 starts. Beato took the loss for the Keys after surrendering five runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings of work.

The second of this four-game series is scheduled for Saturday night at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston-Salem will send RHP Clevelan Santeliz (3-6, 5.02) to the mound, while Frederick will counter with RHP Tim Bascom (6-5, 5.93). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
