THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg lost 7-3 in game two of a three-game series with Frederick Tuesday night at City Stadium...The Hillcats dropped the first two games of the set before the final game of the season against the Keys was canceled due to rain...Tonight is the game three of a now six-game homestand, which are the last games of the 2008 regular season for the Green & Gold...
VS. SALEM: The Cats and Avs are even at eight games a piece in their season series heading into their final set of the year...Lynchburg has a 4-2 advantage at City Stadium...Last season Salem dominated the series taking 16 of the 20 games between the two...Including an 8-2 record against the Hillcats in Lynchburg....The Avs have the advantage in the all-time series against the Cats 145-123, but they are 61-70 against the them in the Hill City...Salem has the advantage in the all-time series against Lynchburg 453-448...The Avalanche are the only team in 2008 that the Hillcats can finish with a winning record against...
DONE WITH THE NORTH: The Hillcats completed their games against Northern Division teams with their rain-shortened series against Frederick...The Cats lost the season series to the Keys 7-12 against the Hillcats and went 3-5 against Frederick at City Stadium...Lynchburg was much more successful against their divisional foes this season, going 26-33 (12-16 at home and 14-17 on the road), while they have gone 28-47 (16-20 at home and 12-27 on the road) against Southern Division opponents...
EERILY REMINISCENT: Tuesday night's loss to the Keys looked strangely similar to the Hillcats loss on Monday night...In both games the Cats committed multiple errors in one inning in which the Keys scored multiple runs and they were held to one hit and scoreless in the first six innings of the contest...
FLAWED FRAMES: In the fifth inning of Tuesday night's game the Hillcats committed two errors that led to five unearned runs for the Keys...In the third inning of Monday night's contest the Cats committed three errors that led to two unearned runs...Lynchburg committed a season-high five errors in that game...In the series the Keys scored 12 runs, seven of them were unearned...On their recent six-game road trip the Hillcats committed just two errors and allowed just one unearned run...When they went error less in the first three games of that trip at Frederick it marked the first time all season the Cats had gone three consecutive games without an error...The Cats .969 fielding percentage and 161 errors both rank 7th in the Carolina League...
LONE STAR: INF Jim Negrych was the only Hillcat named to the 2008 year end All-Star team...Before his promotion to Double-A Altoona on July 29th, Negrych was leading the league in batting average (.370), hits (143), doubles (36), runs (77) and on-base percentage (.448), he also was fifth in slugging percentage (.508) and extra-base hits (42)...His .370 average has all but secured the Carolina League batting title...Negrych was named Topps Carolina League Player of the month for the July when he batted .402 with 12 doubles, three homers, 20 RBI, and 17 runs scored...Negrych and SS Brian Friday were both named to the mid-season All-Star team for Lynchburg...
LONG ROAD BACK: C Chris Jones threw out his first potential base theif Tuesday night when he threw out the Keys Jason White attempting to steal second base...He entered the game 2-for-42 on the season, but both "caught stealings" were pick-offs by the pitcher that did not involve the catcher...Jones missed all of 2007 after having shoulder surgery after playing briefly with the Hillcats in 2006...During that time he threw out three of the ten men who tried to steal on him...
CAT OWNER: Frederick's RHP Brandon Erbe picked up his third win of the season against Lynchburg on Tuesday night by tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out nine...In four starts against the Hillcats the righty has gone 3-0 with 0.39 ERA (one earned run in 23 and 1/3 innings pitched)...Erbe did not pitch against the Cats in 2007 despite starting 25 games in the CL... TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: LHP Douglas Arguello was signed by the Astros in 2001 out of Nicaragua...His first three years in professional baseball he pitched at the Rookie level and went a combined 5-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 43 appearances in relief...In 2005 he pitched for Short Season Low-A Tri-City and went 2-6 with a 5.62 ERA in 14 starts...He started the 2006 campaign with Low-A Lexington and posted an 0-3 record with a 6.42 ERA in 10 starts before returning to Tri-City...He finished the season with a 6-6 mark and a 4.14 ERA in 14 starts with the Valley Cats...Last season Arguello was back in Lexington and had a 6-10 record with a 5.24 ERA in 29 games (27 starts) with the Legends...This season the lefty progressed to Advanced-A and has gone 10-5 with a 3.31 ERA in 26 appearances (24 starts)...He has made three starts against Lynchburg this season and has gone 2-0 with a 4.61 ERA...
