SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors defeated the Delaware 87ers 116-95 Friday night in a game where seven Warriors scored in double figures.
Santa Cruz was led by Cameron Jones, who scored 20 points. Daniel Nwaelele scored 19, while Joe Alexander had 17 points and eight rebounds in his first start for the Warriors this season. Seth Curry also scored 17 and dished out five assists, while Mychel Thompson scored 14 points and had five assists off the bench. Hilton Armstrong scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds, and Lance Goulbourne scored 10 points. Ognjen Kuzmic, currently on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, blocked four shots and had four steals.
Delaware was paced by Thanasis Antetokounmpo, who led all scorers with 24 points. Josh Akognon recorded the only double-double of the evening with 15 points and 11 assists, while B.J. Young scored 18 off the bench. Norvel Pelle blocked a game-high five shots.
Delaware scored first and held the lead for 23 seconds until Daniel Nwaelele hit a three-pointer to make it 3-2. Santa Cruz never looked back, extending its lead to double-digits off a Cameron Jones three-pointer with 4:37 left in the first. Delaware cut the deficit to seven when Thanasis Antetokounmpo connected on a three with 8:13 left in the third, but Seth Curry scored five straight points to put the Warriors up by 12. Santa Cruz eventually led by 28 in the final frame and won by 21.
The Warriors outshot the 87ers (47.1%-39.8%), grabbed more rebounds (58-38), dished out more assists (28-16) and had more steals (15-14). Delaware scored more points in the paint (58-44) and committed fewer turnovers (19-26).
The Santa Cruz Warriors return to Kaiser Permanente Arena on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. to face the Bakersfield Jam.
