Dayton Dragons News Release

Beloit, Wisconsin-Brandon Waring drilled a grand slam home run and added a solo homer and Denis Phipps connected on a three-run shot to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 9-2 win over the Beloit Snappers on Wednesday night.

The win lifted the Dragons into a tie for first place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division as they improved to 8-5. The Dragons went 3-2 on their five game Wisconsin road trip.

With Beloit leading 1-0 in the third, the Dragons put together a two-out rally. Keltavious Jones singled, Kevyn Feiner walked, and Todd Frazier reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Waring followed with a long drive to center field that easily cleared the fence for the Dragons first grand slam homer of the year.

After Jones drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-1, Phipps drilled a three-run home run to center field in the fifth to make it an 8-1 game. It was Phipps' second home run in the last two nights.

After Beloit scored a single run in the fifth, Waring drilled his second home run of the night leading off the seventh to make it 9-2. With the home run, Waring joined Frazier in a tie for the league lead in homers with five. He also took over the league lead in runs batted in, pending the results of other Midwest League games on Wednesday. Waring went 3 for 5 on the night and scored three times while driving in five.

Phipps went 3 for 5 with the homer along with a single and triple as part of a 15 hit attack. Brett Bartles reached base in all four plate appearances with two singles and two walks and Jones also added two hits.

Dragons starting pitcher Luis Montano (2-0) earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and a strikeouts.

Jeremy Horst tossed three scoreless innings for the Dragons, allowing just one hit while striking out six. The six strikeouts matched a Dragons team high for the year.

Terrell Young pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the Dragons win.

The Dragons will open a six game homestand Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Clinton Lumber Kings at Fifth Third Field. Curtis Partch (0-1, 4.66) will start for the Dragons against Clinton's Derek Holland (0-0, 1.86). The game will be televised on Time Warner Digital Cable Channel 99.

Notes: The Dragons' 15 base hits were a season high...Jones extended his hitting streak to six straight games. He is 12 for 25 during the streak...The Dragons bullpen has allowed runs in only two innings over the past nine games. They have worked 36.1 innings during that stretch, allowing a total of four runs.
