Chiefs win 2-1 in 11 innings

Peoria, IL -The Peoria Chiefs defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 2-1 in 11 innings in the final game of a three-game series Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs took two-of-three from the defending Midwest League Champions and finished the homestand 4-6, improving to 6-8 overall.

With the game tied 1-1 in the 11th inning, the Chiefs ended their longest homestand of the season in walk-off fashion. Nate Samson hit his first career home run over the wall in left field off Whitecaps reliever Santo Mieses to give the Chiefs the 2-1 win.

The Whitecaps brought in the first run of the game in the second inning after drawing three consecutive walks from Alberto Cabrera. Joe Tucker followed the third walk with a sacrifice fly to right to score Jordan Newton and make it 1-0. Peoria tied the game in the third inning. Drew Rundle started the inning with a double off Caps starter Paul Nardozzi. Rundle stole third base as Cliff Andersen drew a walk, and Newton's throw went into left-field allowing Rundle to score. Both teams had numerous chances to score from the fourth to the 11th inning. The Caps left a runner on base in each of the last eight innings. The Chiefs were hitless with runners in scoring position and lost the potential game winning run at third base in the ninth.

Cabrera lasted five innings and allowed just the one run on three hits. He walked five batters and struck out three but did not factor in the decision. Craig Muschko pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out one. Dustin Sasser tossed two scoreless innings out of the pen and allowed just one hit. Steve Vento picked up the win, his second of the season, pitching two scoreless innings and allowing one hit.

Player of the Game -Nate Samson (2B) - Samson picked up his first career home run in the bottom of the eleventh to win the game for the Chiefs. Samson went 2-for-3 and laid down two sacrifice bunts.

Notes... The Chiefs won two games on the home stand via the walk off home run...Peoria is 1-2 in extra inning games this season...The Chiefs finished their longest home stand of the season at 4-6...Donaldson has thrown out 10-of-19 potential base stealers this season...The Chiefs have the day off on Thursday before traveling to Midland, Michigan to take on Great Lakes Loons Friday at 6:05 PM CST...The Chiefs will send LH Zach Ashwood (0-2, 1.08) to the mound against LH Steven Johnson (0-2, 2.79) for the Loons...The game can be heard live beginning with the pre-game show at 5:50 PM online at www.peoriachiefs.com or on WOAM 1350.
